A Resolution Authorizing THE SUBMISSION OF A FORMAL REQUEST TO THE GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION \n \n FOR RECONSIDERATION OF THE CONCEPT DESIGN FOR THE WIDENING OF ST. MARY'S ROAD \n \n FROM ROBIN DRIVE TO NORTHSTAR DRIVE whereas, the widening of St. Mary's Road from Robin Drive to Northstar Drive has been \n \n identified in the City's Transportation Improvement Program as a needed project \n \n to help elevate traffic problems and concerns in area of the community; and,
whereas, the Georgia Department of Transportation has developed a concept design for \n \n such a project and has held a public information open house meeting on August \n \n 17, 2006 for interested citizens to review and comment on this project; and, \n \n WHEREAS, due to the development that is occurring and will be occurring over \n \n the next several years in this area of the community, such a road project is \n \n needed; and,
WHEREAS, the Columbus City Council has reviewed the proposed roadway design and \n \n believes that further review of the proposed concept by the Georgia Department \n \n of Transportation is warranted due to the potential detrimental effect the \n \n proposed design will have upon existing commercial, residential, religious and \n \n educational uses in the area.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, HEREBY RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:

That the Georgia Department of Transportation is respectfully requested to \n \n reexamine its proposed conceptual design for the widening of St. Mary's Road \n \n from Robin Drive to Northstar Drive concerning the following aspects: \n \n 1) That the project be redesign to provide better access to commercial uses in \n \n the area, particularly between Robin Drive and Interstate 185. \n \n 2) That the project provide a better access to churches and other such uses, \n \n without requiring additional traffic to travel through adjoining neighborhoods \n \n to gain access on to St. Mary's Road. \n \n 3) That better access be designed for the St. Mary's Road Magnet Academy as to \n \n accommodate pick up and drop off traffic during the school year \n \n 4) The widening of St. Mary's Road be extended from Northstar Drive to its \n \n ending point at the Fort Benning Military Reservation. \n \n The City Council is requesting the Georgia Department of Transportation's \n \n reconsideration of this road project based upon these needs, will continue to \n \n work in cooperation with them in the development of this project.
