A Resolution Authorizing THE CITY MANAGER TO IMPLEMENT THE RE-STRIPING OF CHEROKEE AVENUE FROM GARRARD \n \n STREET TO CAMILLE AVENUE AS A FOUR-LANE ROADWAY WITH CERTAIN SAFETY \n \n IMPROVEMENTS THAT INCLUDE, BUT, NOT LIMITED TO THE RECONFIGURATION OF THE \n \n INTERSECTION OF CAMILLE AVENUE WITH CHEROKEE AVENUE, THE INSTALLATION OF RUMBLE \n \n STRIPS AT KEY LOCATIONS TO WARN MOTORISTS OF APPROACHING ROADWAY CURVES, \n \n INSTALL A FLASHING LIGHT AT OR NEAR SLADE DRIVE AND IMPLEMENT A STRICT/ZERO \n \n TOLERANCE SPEED ENFORCEMENT AS NEEDED, ALL TO IMPROVE TRAFFIC SAFETY ALONG THIS \n \n ROADWAY SEGMENT. whereas, the City responded to citizen inquiries concerning traffic accidents along \n \n Cherokee Avenue from Garrard Street to Camille Avenue in which vehicles crashed \n \n into Weracoba Creek; and,
whereas, the City researched several alternatives to reduce this type of accident \n \n potential bringing several alternatives to the public that generated \n \n considerable interest and debate on these alternatives; and,
WHEREAS, the public interest along with utility work being performed along this \n \n section of Cherokee Avenue delayed implementation of any improvements; and, \n \n WHEREAS, the 2007 school year begins in August requiring that the roadway be \n \n placed back into operation for which a four-lane section allows the immediate \n \n operation along with certain safety improvements; and, \n \n WHEREAS, the four-lane operation with safety improvements will be evaluated \n \n again after a twelve month period of time to determine if safety improvements \n \n are working satisfactorily.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, HEREBY
RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:
The City Manager is hereby authorized to implement the re-striping of \n \n Cherokee Avenue from Garrard Street to Camille Avenue as a four-lane roadway \n \n with certain safety improvements that include, but, not limited to the \n \n reconfiguration of the intersection of Camille Avenue with Cherokee Avenue, the \n \n installation of rumble strips at key locations to warn motorists of approaching \n \n roadway curves, install a flashing light at or near Slade Drive and implement a \n \n strict/zero tolerance speed enforcement as needed, all to improve traffic \n \n safety along this roadway segment.
