Subject: Joint Land Use Study
The Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) to address encroachment issues between Fort
Benning and surrounding counties is underway. This study is being conducted by
EDAW, Inc., for the region through the Valley Partnership Joint Development
Authority.
The first public meeting was held in Columbus on August 9, 2007, at the Main
Library on Macon Road. Similar public meetings will be conducted in each of
the surrounding counties included in the study. The purpose of these meetings
is to provide the public an overview of the purpose and scope of the study.
There will be additional public meetings in September and October to share
specific recommendations from the consultants. Attached is a copy of an
information sheet on the regional Joint Land Use Study being distributed by
EDAW at the initial public meetings. A website has also be established for the
study at www.thevalleypartnership.com/jlus. The study is projected to be
completed by later October 2007.
The JLUS is one of two studies being funded by the Department of Defense to
address growth issues related to the Base Realignment and Closure Commission
recommendation. An RFP is currently being advertised for a Regional Growth
Management Study. This study will identify regional growth issues and provide
specific recommendations for counties to address the growth.
If you would like additional information concerning the JLUS or the Regional
Growth Management Study, please let me know.
