On Tuesday January 8, 2008 the Engineering Staff met with representatives from

Uptown businesses to begin the process of permitting Outdoor Cafes. If you

recall, I previously advised Council that the Outdoor Cafe Permit requirements

listed in the U.D.O. would be enforced upon the completion of the Broadway

Streetscapes project. The streetscapes project is substantially complete and

staff will begin enforcing the Outdoor Cafe requirements as of February 8, 2008.

To assist businesses with the permitting process, Engineering staff met with

the businesses to review the requirements of the ordinance and to assist with

completing the required forms for obtaining a permit. This meeting focused

only on those businesses desiring to operate an outdoor cafe on Broadway since

the Uptown Facade Board has already approved the basic design templates common

to all locations on Broadway. Staff will meet separately with the other

businesses located in Uptown, but not on Broadway, to assist them with the

permitting process. As previously communitcated to Council, any fees

associated with obtaining an Outdoor Cafe Permit have been waived for the

initial 2008 permit period.
