Subject: Traffic Signals
No attachments for this document.
The Georgia Department of Transportation has provided the City with a
sufficient number of LED lenses to convert the traffic signals at 110 of the
City's 250 intersections from incandescent lenses to LED lenses. Through the
efforts of Ron Hamlett, Traffic Engineer, a commitment has also been received
from DOT to convert the remaining traffic signals to LED lenses in the near
future.
If you recall, Ron made an excellent presentation at the November 22, 2005
Council work Session on his Management Development Program project comparing
LED to incandescent lenses for traffic signals. The project highlighted the
advantages of LED traffic signal and pedestrian signal lenses over incandescent
lenses. The LED lenses are less expensive to operate, brighter/more visible
thus safer, and last significantly longer than incandescent lenses. The
projected energy savings of a full conversion to the LED lenses for both
traffic signals and pedestrian signal heads is an estimated $60,000 per year.
The total cost of converting all traffic signals and pedestrian signals to LED
was approximately $1,049,000. Securing the traffic signal lenses from DOT
saves the City approximately $800,000.
DOT did not provide LED lenses for the pedestrian signal heads since this item
is not currently on the State Bid Contract. The cost to replace these lenses
with LED will be approximately $250,000. Ron is continuing to work with DOT in
an attempt to secure this equipment at no cost to the City.
