Agenda Item # 5

Columbus Consolidated Government

Council Meeting

3/08/2016

Agenda Report # 92

TO: Mayor and City Council

SUBJECT: Bicycle Columbus Donation

INITIATED BY: Planning Department

Recommendation: Approval is requested to receive $1,020.60 in donations from

Bicycle Columbus for the purpose of purchasing thirty (30) roadway signs.

Background: Bicycle Columbus, a local bicycle advocacy group, wished to donate

the funds necessary for the city to purchase thirty (30) road signs that

display the state's three foot pass law for bicyclists riding on roadways.

Three feet is the amount of distance considered to be safe for motorists

passing a bicyclist on a roadway. The signs will be placed in strategic

locations throughout the community where there is high bicyclist activity and

motorist interaction. The Traffic Engineering division will order the thirty

road signs from a vendor and will install them at the specified locations in

accordance with all state and local regulations.

Analysis: The three foot pass signs help to remind drivers to pass bicyclists

at a safe distance on roadways and can help to educate drivers about the law

regarding safe passing. Displaying signs such as the three foot pass sign can

also help foster a sense of community towards all modes of transportation.

Financial Considerations: Bicycle Columbus will donate $1,020.60 to the General

Fund Donations Revenue account as item 0101-250-2100-4802. Traffic Engineering

Division will be reimbursed from the General Fund at this amount.

Projected Annual Fiscal Impact Statement: None. This is a one-time donation of

funds.

Legal Considerations: None.

Recommendations/Actions: Approval is requested to accept these funds into the

General Fund Donations Revenue account and allow the Traffic Engineering

Division to purchase and install the road signs.
