WHEREAS, Ms. Margaret Cruz was born in Buena Vista, Georgia daughter of Ms.
Corene Cottle Matthews and Mr. Levester Matthews;
WHEREAS, Ms. Cruz and her sister, Ms. Salome Matthews Wallace parents died and
their grandmother Ms. Ruth Edna Cottle, raised both sisters;
WHEREAS, under the leadership of Reverend Simpson, Ms. Cruz joined the Mt. Zion
Baptist Church at the age of five and attended Carver Elementary, Junior, and
Senior High Schools;
WHEREAS, she moved at the age of 9 to Miami, Florida where she became a member
of St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church with the Reverend Willie Frank Tanner,
attended Florida Memorial University and later married Mr. Manuel Cruz
(deceased);
WHEREAS, Ms. Cruz taught clerical studies at Dorsey Skills Center and South
Ridge Senior High School, retired as the Assistant Superintendant of the Dade
County School Board and started a personal ministry to the homeless;
WHEREAS, in 2006, she relocated to Columbus, Georgia and became a member of
Greenhill Missionary Baptist Church under Reverend George Cofield, Jr. where
she organized the Pastor?s Aid Ministry;
WHEREAS, Ms. Cruz has continued her ministry to prepare food and take clothing
to homeless individuals living near the Chattahoochee River and also
participates in her Church?s outreach to the homeless on the second and fourth
Saturdays of each month;
WHEREAS, her tireless efforts and years of charitable commitment to care for
the homeless in Columbus, Georgia will always be remembered.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA HEREBY RESOLVES:
We hereby commend and express our deep appreciation to Ms. Margaret Cruz for
her contributions and care for homeless individuals in the Columbus community.
We wish her every success as she returns to be with her family in Miami,
Florida. Let a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Ms. Margaret Cruz.

Introduced at a regular meeting of the Council of Columbus, Georgia held on the
16th day of September, 2014, and adopted at said meeting by the affirmative
