Subject: Serve the Kids Tennis Grant
Initiated By: Parks and Recreation Department
Recommendation: Approval is requested to submit an application and if approved,
accept funds from the United States Tennis Association (USTA) foundation Serve
the Kids Grant for a tennis and health awareness program and to amend the
Multi-Governmental Fund by the amount of the grant awarded. The grant amount
requested is up to $ 25,000, or otherwise awarded, to be used to implement the
program and payroll of existing staff.
Background: This program is designed to promote healthy lifestyles by combating
childhood obesity by providing disadvantaged, at-risk children the opportunity
to learn and play tennis and improve skills in a structured format. This
program is targeting at-risk youth ages 5 - 18. The program must address
nutrition, improve skills, mentor interaction, positive role modeling and
provide teamwork.
Analysis: The United States Tennis Association (USTA) and NRPA are both
nationally recognized organizations that focus on the quality of life for
citizens. This program grant will address and improve the health and well being
of all the participants.
Amend: Amend the Multi-Governmental Fund for the amount approved for the grant
Amend: The Department of Parks & Recreation to be the facilitator of the
program and funds to implement and facilitate the program.
Financial Considerations: The grant amount requested is up to $25,000 for the
Columbus Department of Parks and Recreation. The City is not required to put up
any matching funds to participate in this grant.
Recommendation: Authorize a resolution to approve the City to submit an
application for, and if awarded, accept a grant from the USTA Serve the Kids
program for a tennis and health awareness program and to amend the
Multi-Governmental Fund by the amount of the grant awarded.
