A meeting of the Recreation Advisory Board was held on Wednesday, August 22nd

at 12 Noon, at the Frank Chester Recreation Center.

Members Present: Gary Gibson, Lyndon Burch, Mike Peacock, Irene Pate, Tracy

Belt

Members Absent: Andre Dye, Bob Johnson, Willie Dickerson, Arnold Goodman,

Derrick Greene, Jennifer Collins

City Staff Present: James Worsley, Tommy Groce, Becky Glisson, Mia Frederick

Call to Order: Dr. Worsley called the meeting to order at 12:30 by greeting and

welcoming the board, and letting everyone go around the room to introduce

themselves. As well as welcoming our new board member, Tracy Belt.

Tim Marshall speaks, and says that he appreciates all that you do. Southside

takes a lot of pride in the citizens and Columbus as a whole.

Roll was taken.

Dr. Worsley motioned for the minutes from the June 2012 meeting be approved.

There was one error, that Becky Glisson found, and that mistake was corrected.

The minutes were approved by Irene Pate, and second by Mike Peacock.

Dr. Worsley explains that since the chair and vice chair are not present, that

he will gladly substitute for them.

Dr. Worsley then moves on to different reports held by the staff. Becky Glisson

explained that the new budget started July 1, and that there are also some

major projects coming on line. We are getting an Awning installed at the Lake

Oliver Marina. Now we are working on getting lights at the Double Churches

Tennis Courts. (Hopefully)

Tommy Groce then begins his report on Park Services, and they are beginning to

go through their busy fall schedule, and football season. Dr. Worsley then

wants Tommy to give an outline of park services for Tracy Belt; because she is

new. In Park services, they maintain parks in the city, athletic facilities in

the city, fall line trace, river walk, etc., trash pickups at the park. After

giving an overview of Park Services, Tommy continued giving his report. In

December they will finish up football, conclude with the Coaches association

all-star game. Soccer will pick up in the fall season in September. Golden Park

will be hosting adult men?s baseball league.

Dr. Worsley explains to everyone that the twin to Park Services is Recreation

Services and it is Holli Browder?s area, but since she is out of town with

Travis Landrum at the George Harris Executive Management Institute, he will

gladly explain her role. Holli is over the recreation centers, senior centers.

She oversees Britt David Cultural Arts Studio, with its enterprise services and

it is revenue driven.

Dr. Worsley, then mentions the website and if you haven?t seen it, then you

should go check it out. It has become very user friendly from our old website.

Jenny Teague in IT has done an amazing job.

Dr. Worsley then gives a recap, letting everyone know what is going on so far.

This past year we have had summer camps. We?ve also had partnerships with

Columbus State University that have aided to the summer camps. With Dr. Gibson

and some of his staff, we are going to get two middle schools this year, but

have lost Britt David Elementary school. We partnered with CSU for a grant that

was $500,000, and in the next 5 years we will get that money. The money will go

to our programs in Community Schools.

Community Schools received recognition through the COA and 3 schools should be

accredited by December. We are excited about that.

Extended Pool Season is Saturday and Sunday through labor day at Double

Churches.

Columbus Hurricanes ? Free Swim Clinics, we advertised well through email,

Facebook, and our website.

Dr. Worsley as Irene Pate to give a summary of National Night Out that was held

in August. She stated that the purpose of National Night Out was to make people

come out of their houses and get into their neighborhoods, and get to know

their neighbors, and to talk about crime prevention. She stated that Dr.

Worsley got Parks and Recreation involved last year, and Britt David pottery

studio and Parks and Recreation put on an event every year called the Empty

Bowl. 100% of money goes to Kids Caf?s here in Columbus to eat a hot meal.

Bowls are provided, and after the community paints them, they will be for sale

at the Empty Bowl. This year 120 bowls were decorated. At National Night Out,

firefighters, policeman, Dr. Worsely, and may citizens from the community were

there. ThePolice dept wanted to come back and finish their bowl. Even a group

of about 6-8 women made reservations and stayed for an hour to paint bowls and

socialize. National Night Out, at the different Recreation and Senior Centers,

held an amazing turn out.

We move on to Tim Marshall, who talks about the clothing drive and partnering

with the empowered youth of Columbus. Over the summer he had a camp fit for fun

that focused on kids around the city with an 85% body mass index. It was a very

successful 5 day camp. Frank Chester has partnered with Columbus Times with a

back to school drive call summer fest. Well over 700 people attended, and when

partnered with Columbus Baptist Association and it was doubled in size. Tim

Marshall concluded that there are great partnerships happening on the Southside.

Dr. Worsley lets us know what is coming up through Columbus Parks and

Recreation. Columbus Parks and Recreation Awards Banquet District III, Awards

Banquet for Sept. 26th. Everyone has received their invitation, please send in

your RSVP. We had to bid for the venue to come to Columbus, as well as we would

bid for state conference. The cost of GRPA is zero to come to Columbus, and

that?s all part of the bidding process. State Conference will be in Athens this

year. Our dept is really becoming more involved. It is moving forward in

getting involved in .

Dr. Worsley stated that we are up for accreditation of the 2 year process. We

are trying to meet 144 standards.

He lets us know that:

Veterans Day Parade is Nov. 10th

Christmas Parade is Dec. 8th.

Boxwood is getting renovated going to be about 65,000 dollars.

If you have something you want to see in the Friday Letter, please email and

let us know, so we can get it in there.

Open Discussion:

Becky: Professor for Csu to make it a requirement to attend the Ma Rainey

house. Like the Carson McCollough house to the English Dept.

Open Disucssion:

Irene Pate- Reports if a problem has been seen to not go to the council but the

site supervisor; the person in charge, and Dr. Worsley elaborates on that to

bring up a written report- documentation, and bring it to the monthly meeting.

Dr. Worsley mentions that Bylaws that will be given at the next meeting from

City Council.

Lyndon Burch- Congratulates Mr. Marshall for summer fest. Everyone enjoyed it.

Dr Worsley- New board of Directors for United way.

Mike Peacock got his first call and email that was sent from a citizen.

Particular elementary school went to a lower number of slots and were not able

to accommodate a number of students and we worked with the principle to get

things handled.

Dr. Worsley, and Dr. Gibson present that programs, we have at middle school is

before school and look at stats, that a lot of problems dealing with High

School students occur between what we do between 4:30-6:30pm.

After hearing discussions for the RAB, Dr. Worsley asked for any more

questions, and then the meeting was motioned to adjourn by Mike Peacock.

Meeting adjourned at 1:21pm
