THE GREATER COLUMBUS GOLF AUTHORITY
MINUTES OF MEETING
September 25, 2007
The Greater Columbus Golf Authority held the scheduled monthly meeting at Bull
Creek Golf Course. Members present were Floyd Washington, Nancy Wilkeson, Nan
Hopkins, Michael Silverstein, Aubry Burt, Donald Clack and June Holder. Staff
members present were John Milam and Steve Brown. Richard Hagler and Willie
Hill had an excused absence.
Minutes of the August 28, 2007 meeting were approved as presented. Motion made
by June Holder and seconded by Aubry Burt.
Old Business
There is still a concern that the mechanic at Bull Creek is underpaid. It was
agreed that this concern would be revisited at midyear, and if money is
available at that time, an adjustment may be approved.
New Business
Hardaway High School?s new coach has requested the use of Bull Creek for The
Hardaway Invitational in April 2008. This event would require the use of the
course for two days and a day for practice rounds during the second week of
April. Historically, this is peak season for Bull Creek, and the board has
some concerns about the loss of revenue as a result of this event. A motion
was made by Floyd Washington to price course access for this event at market to
prevent any revenue loss. The motion was seconded by Michael Silverstein and
then passed.
Superintendent Report by Steve Brown
The height of the greens mower is being adjusted in September. The course is
being watered every other day to conserve water. We have a 30-day supply
left. The new greens mower for Bull Creek and Oxbow Creek were delivered last
month. The old chipping green and practice green are being over-seeded as well
as the tees. As the season changes, resources will shift their focus to dead
tree removal and bunker maintenance.
Our new prison guard, Mr. Hartman, started Guard school this week.
Godwin Creek
The First Tee is in the middle of an exciting fall. Dave Davis, Program
Director, and his team are conducting programming every day of the week except
Sunday and Monday. There are currently over 50 participants in one of the
following programs: Little Peoples, PAR, BIRDIE and EAGLE.
In addition to programming for The First Tee, Godwin Creek is providing golf
access for the middle school golf competition this fall. Nine middle schools
are competing weekly for six weeks. Approximately 130 area middle school
students are participating and as this program grows, finding golf access is
becoming quite a challenge for its administrator, Leon Dunagan. Godwin Creek
is providing the majority of the golf access with Lakewood and Red Oak
providing access as well.
Director of Golf
Bull Creek is off to a good start. Revenue is slightly up as compared to this
time last year. Oxbow Creek is about the same as last year.
Donald Clack adjourned the meeting at 4:42 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Nan Hopkins, Secretary
