SUBJECT: Georgia Forestry Commission Contract
INITIATED BY: Finance Department
Recommendation: Approval is requested to approve an agreement with the Georgia
Forestry Commission for operation of the forestry program in the amount of
$4,240, 10? per acre of privately held forestlands within Muscogee County.
Background: The Georgia Forestry Commission, under provisions of the ?Forest
Fire Protection Act?, approved February 23, 1949, as amended, particularly by
an Act approved February 7, 1950, and Act approved March 3, 1955 and House Bill
No. 1055 enacted by the 2010 session of the General Assembly of Georgia, is
responsible to keep records and operate the forestry program. The assessment
increased in HB 1055 from 4? per acre to 10? per acre.
Analysis: This assessment has not been adjusted since 1967. The assessment is
based on the number of commercial private forest acres within Muscogee County.
Financial Considerations: The agreement is budgeted in the FY11 Adopted
Budget.
Legal Considerations: The Columbus Consolidated Government is eligible to
enter into this contract.

A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING TO APPROVE A COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT WITH THE
GEORGIA FORESTRY COMMISSION FOR OPERATION OF THE FORESTRY PROGRAM IN THE AMOUNT
OF $4,240, 10? PER ACRE OF PRIVATELY HELD FOREST LANDS WITHIN MUSCOGEE COUNTY.
WHEREAS, the Georgia Forestry Commission, under provisions of the
?Forest Fire Protection Act?, approved February 23, 1949, as amended,
particularly by an Act approved February 7, 1950, and Act approved March 3,
1955 and House Bill No. 1055 enacted by the 2010 session of the General
Assembly of Georgia, is responsible to keep records and operate the forestry
program; and,
WHEREAS, the forestry assessment for wildfire protection has not been
adjusted since 1967; and,
WHEREAS, House Bill 1055 increased the assessment from 4? per acre to
10? per acre.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, HEREBY RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:
That the Mayor and/or the City Manager is hereby authorized to approve an
agreement with the Georgia Forestry Commission; and authorize the Mayor to have
signature authority.
