D. M. ?Mike? Edwards
Biographical Information
Mike is the Director of the Georgia State Law Enforcement Certification program
and works for the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police.
Mike was born in Atlanta in 1939. He received his basic education in the
Atlanta Public schools.
After his graduation for Sylvan Hills High School in 1957 Mike attended several
colleges before he settled down. He attended Howard College in Birmingham,
Alabama (Sanford University), Atlanta Division UGA and Mercer University.
With about 2 years of college under his belt Mike joined the Atlanta Police
Department in 1961. His many and varied experiences while with APD included the
integration of the Atlanta Public School System, the Civil Rights era, the
Hippie sub-culture, Atlanta?s Black police officers granted full police
authority, and the missing and murdered children?s case. Mike also experienced
the deaths of 19 police officers that he knew personally, who gave their lives
in the performance of their duties.
Mike was promoted through the ranks of APD and spent from 1972 until retirement
in 1980 as an executive, holding either the rank of Major or Assistant Chief.
During his tenure with APD Mike completed his Bachelor?s degree in accounting
(?69) and his Master degree in Business Administration (?72) from Georgia State
University.
After Mike left APD he worked in the private sector with Richway Stores, a mass
merchandising retailer. While at Richway he rose through the ranks quickly
until he was appointed Director of Loss Prevention. Mike worked at Richway from
1981 ? 1986.
When Federated Department Stores merged Richway with Gold Circle stores Mike
was employed by the Georgia Police Academy where he served in the capacity of
Assistant Superintendent for 2 years until he accepted the position with the
city of Riverdale.
Mike has been an adjunct instructor for several Colleges or Universities. He
began with Clayton State in 1971 and later teaching at DeKalb College, Brenau
College and, for the last approximately 15 years, at Columbus State University.
Mike serves as an instructor for the Georgia Law Enforcement Command College
where his primary subject matter is Public Budgeting and Financial
Administration.
Mike spent 3 years as a Major in the Forest Park Police Department as well as
almost 9 years as Chief of Police in Riverdale.
Mike has participated in several different types of disciplinary systems during
his law enforcement career and has been exposed to the Federal Court system as
well.
