A RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, former Georgia State Senator Floyd Hudgins died at his home in
Cusseta, Georgia on May 11, 2010, at the age of 80;
WHEREAS, Senator Hudgins was born March 11, 1930 in Etowah County, Alabama, son
of a steel worker and labor organizer;
WHEREAS, in 1967, he received his high school diploma through a correspondence
course and served in the Georgia National Guard, the U.S. Army Reserves and
worked in the real estate and insurance businesses;
WHEREAS, Senator Hudgins started his political career as a write-in candidate
and won a one-year term on the Cusseta Council in 1958 and in 1968, defeated an
incumbent state senator for his seat where he would serve for the next 20 years;
WHEREAS, in 1971 Senator Hudgins was instrumental in the consolidation of
Columbus-Muscogee County, and in the 1980?s chaired committees working to
create Georgia?s Juvenile Justice System; Defense and Veterans Affairs
Committee; the Banking and Finance Committee and phenylketonurics (PKU) testing
for infants;
WHEREAS, he also worked to integrate the National Little League in Columbus and
helped designate the Springer Opera House as The State Theatre of Georgia;
WHEREAS, Senator Hudgins is survived by a son Wayne Hudgins and his wife, Anne;
daughters Lynne Hudgins Schorr; Sharon Janelle and husband, Gerald Clauson;
Sandra Paige and husband, Clark Huff; brother Ray Hudgins and wife, Leila;
sister Helen Holder; his former wife Margie Hand Hudgins; grandchildren Leslie
Schorr-Barker (Jimmy); Laura Schorr; Seth Hudgins (Tabitha); Shawn Hudgins and
Dustin Chandler.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA HEREBY RESOLVES:
We hereby convey to the family of Senator Floyd Hudgins our sincere condolences
and deepest sympathy. His service to the Columbus community will long be
remembered. Let a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Senator
Floyd Hudgins.

Introduced at a regular meeting of the Council of Columbus, Georgia held on the
