Agenda Item # 1

Columbus Consolidated Government

Council Meeting

04/27/2010

Agenda Report # 494

TO: Mayor and Council

SUBJECT: Naming of the Rails to Trails Project

INITIATED BY: Planning Department

Recommendation: Approval is requested for the adoption of a resolution naming

the Rails to Trails project the "Columbus Fall Line Trace".

Background: With the construction of the Rails to Trails project underway, it

was determined that a more formal name was needed to help identify this

important recreational resource. A community-wide naming contest was held

which solicited entries from citizens throughout Muscogee County.

Approximately 217 entries were received, and in turn were reviewed by a special

five member citizen committee. The committee reviewed only the suggested names

for the trail and did not know who actually submitted the application. After

much deliberation, the committee unanimously decided on the name presented,

along with winners for both second and third place awards

Analysis: The committee selected the name the "Columbus Fall Line Trace", as

submitted by Ms. Brinkley Pound. It is this name that is recommended to the

Council for acceptance.

Financial Considerations: Donated prizes for local businesses have been

awarded to the first, second and third place winners.

Legal Considerations: None

Recommendations/ Actions: Adopt the resolution naming the Rails to Trails

project the "Columbus Fall Line Trace"
