SUBJECT: Mental Health Court



INITIATED BY: Columbus Office of Crime Prevention





Recommendation: Approval is requested to enter into a one-year contract with

Muscogee County Mental Health Court to award funding for Crime Prevention

initiatives.



Background: Columbus Office of Crime Prevention has agreed to recommend

funding of $75,000.00 to the Mental Health Court toward reduction of recidivism

and continued drug use among Adult offenders.



Analysis: The objective of this program is to present mentally ill individuals

with the opportunity for individualized mental health treatment as opposed to

non-therapeutic environment of jail. With completion of screening and

acceptance into the program, a participant?s progress is reviewed and

encouraged by the court team with use of incentives and sanctions. All

participants are strictly monitored by the court team to ensure they are

following the course of treatment, and that treatment objectives are being

met.



Financial Considerations: These funds are appropriated from the Other Local

Option Sales Tax, Crime Prevention Program and do not require a match.



Recommendations/ Actions: Approve the resolution authorizing the Mayor to

enter into a one year contract with Mental Health Court to provide funding for

mental health treatment as opposed to the non-therapeutic environment of jail.











A RESOLUTION

A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING A CONTRACT WITH THE MENTAL HEALTH COURT FOR $75,000.00

FOR FUNDING THE INITIATIVES OF THE MENTAL HEALTH COURT.

WHEREAS, Mental Health Court has the Mental Health Program to impact lives of

adults to reduce the rate of incarceration among those suffering from mental

illness; and,

WHEREAS, the Columbus Office of Crime Prevention has authorized funding under

the Crime Prevention Program for this project in the amount of $75,000.00 to

Mental Health Court Program.

NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, HEREBY RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:

That the Mayor is hereby authorized to extend the current contract

through the Columbus Office of Crime Prevention with Mental Health Court for

$75,000.00 for funding the Adult Drug Court Program. Funds are budgeted in the

FY14 budget: Other Local Option Sales Tax, Crime Prevention Program.
