MINUTES # 05-08
The Columbus, Georgia, Board of Tax Assessors met Monday, February 11, 2008
at 9:00AM with Chairman William Braxton, Assessors Lawton Grantham, Richard
Stallings, Assessor Ann Grantham and Pat Hunter present. Also present was Chief
Appraiser Betty Middleton.
Assessor Pat Hunter made the motion to approve Min#04-08; Assessor Ann Grantham
seconded the motion; motion carried unanimously.
The Board signed assessment corrections for real estate.
The Board reviewed and approved a VA letter of application for VA homestead
exemptions for 2008. (Parcel ID 088 019 010).
Met with Rev. Mills and Mr. McCary representing Spirit, Truth & Liberty
Ministries Inc. requesting non-taxability for properties located at 10360 Macon
Rd, 10350 Macon Rd and 4057 Pope Rd (Parcel ID 131 001 010a; 131 001 010 and
138 006 004). Rev Mills stated property was purchased for a future church site.
He said as of January 1, 2008 they were not using the properties for any church
related activities. He explained that they are paying for the land, which they
intend to have paid off in 24 to 36 months. Rev. Mills stated at that time they
will combine the three lots and begin with the construction of the church
building. After discussion and the fact that the church is not using the
properties Assessor Richard Stallings made the motion to deny the requests for
non-taxability for the year 2008; Assessor Ann Grantham seconded the motion;
motion carried.
Met with Mr. Craft representing Rosehill Church of Christ requesting
non-taxability for property located at 7589 Old Moon Rd (Parcel ID 073 023 042)
. Mr. Craft said he was a Deacon and Trustee for the Rosehill Church of Christ.
He stated the house is presently occupied by a family rent free. He said the
family is scheduled to move in the near future and at that time the property
will be converted to church meeting rooms and used for church purposes.
Assessor Lawton Grantham made the motion to grant tax exempt status for 2008;
Assessor Ann Grantham seconded the motion; motion carried.
Met with Atty DeGennaro regarding pending court case for Parcel ID 185 009 024.
Atty DeGennaro gave the Board several options for them to consider.
