Council Meeting
March 14, 2006
Agenda Report #110
TO: Mayor and Councilors
SUBJECT: Grant - Youth and Therapeutic Tennis Program Grant
INITIATED BY: City Manager's Office
Recommendation: Approval is requested to submit an application and if approved,
accept funds from the United States Tennis Association (USTA) foundation DEUCE
Grant for a tennis and health awareness program and to amend the
Multi-Governmental Fund by the amount of the grant awarded. The grant amount
requested is $ 12,300.
Background: This program is designed to address the health issues related to
obesity and diabetes in our city. The program will offer health screenings by a
medical partner, education and awareness tools to lead a healthier lifestyle in
an aesthetically pleasing fun environment. The participants will have the
opportunity to learn to play tennis and improve their health along the way. The
health screening and monitoring will be recorded for each participant and a
health assessment will be conducted at the end of the program. Each program
will be designed to teach motor skills, coordination, inclusion and teamwork.
The goal is to get our citizens active, especially those with high risk factors.
Analysis: The USTA and NRPA are both nationally recognized organizations that
focus on the quality of life for citizens. This program grant will address and
improve the health and well-being of all the participants.
Financial Considerations: The grant amount requested is $12,300 for the
Community Schools Division Columbus Parks and Recreation. The City is not
required to put up any matching funds to participate in this grant.
Recommendation: Authorize a resolution to approve the City to submit an
application, and if awarded, accept a grant from the USTA DEUCE program for a
tennis and health awareness program and to amend the Multi-Governmental Fund by
the amount of the grant awarded.
