Director/Staff Update
Millie Deltoro (Community Schools): The Community Schools Valentine Dance will
be held at Comer Recreation Center February 06, 2015 at 7:00 pm. Board members
are welcomed to attend.
Shelley Tippins (Community Schools): The Community Schools management staff
will be traveling to Washington, D.C., March 8th thru March 11th to attend the
National Afterschool Conference. Staff is looking to add a few more sites for
next school year, potentially MLK and Fox Elementary School. Currently we are
in 22 Elementary Schools and 4 Middle Schools.
Tommy Groce (Parks Services): The Adult Basketball league is coming to a close.
The Adult Softball league had a meeting last week at Comer. Depending on the
rainout dates, the league runs March through July. League play will be
conducted 4 nights a week, Monday through Thursday. Fridays through the
weekends are for Special Events. Little league registration and soccer
registration has begun. Baseball opening date is around March 9th. Currently
a tournament is being planned at the end of February that is anticipated to
bring in about 100 teams.
Teresa Snellings (Recreation Services): Our initial efforts with basketball
did not go to well when we asked for a $25.00 fee. We decided that we would go
back to the old way and have play within ourselves with no fee. We currently
have about 5 teams. We will meet to try to come up with a schedule. The Empty
Bowl is schedule March 8th at Northside from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm. Proceeds
will be given to Feeding the Valley. Our joint effort with Phenix City Parks
and Recreation to host a combined senior picnic came across some issues. Some
vendors could not go into Alabama.
James Worsley: (Director): The department has removed the box televisions and
tv brackets from all centers because of potential hazardousness. We wanted to
make the centers more users friendly. Each member should have received an
email of the Parks and Recreation 2014 Annual report. Each board member was
advised to friend Parks and Recreation on the social media. James gave an
updated on the status of U.S.A. Pools. The U.S.A. Pools Management staff
received their termination letter from the city which was read to the committee
by James. Currently the department is working hand and hand with their staff
from 6:00 am until to close each day to protect the merchandise/equipment. The
department is serving as the interim director. A new bid package will be
forthcoming.
Updates from the Board:
Andre Dye: Notified the board that there is a huge water problem at Shirley
Winston along the walking trail next to the baseball fields. Large puddles of
water tend to remain. The department needs to look into to drainage or digging
trenches for this problem. Tommy will look into this but the board was
informed that the facility was built on a low swampy area and it continues to
create problems even for Park Services staff.
Bob Johnson: The loss of Red McDaniel had a huge impact on seniors because he
really supported the seniors. Compliments were giving to James for the Parks
and Recreation 2014 Annual Report but the report did not list the Parks and
Recreation Advisory Council. James apologized and said that he overlooked it.
Vanessa Jackson: Has nothing to report.
Carl Brown: There is a sign containing the direction to the center that is
obscured by a large pine tree as you are coming into Northside. Tommy will take
a ride to see and place a work order to have it trimmed. What does the $25.00
basketball fee covers? Teresa the fee is the registration fee and to offset
some of the fuel cost of using the buses and vans. However, we are no longer
charging a fee for the program.
Willie Dickerson: Has nothing to report.
Mike Peacock: Registration for Little Leagues is well underway way. Try outs
starts Thursday. Northern has over 600 participants to register. Softball has
increased. They are doing work on the T-ball field and putting up a scoreboard
to allow lower level softball games to be played on that field. Practice
fields are being thought about to be used for T-ball day games. Parking was
not talked about at the meeting. A wired scored building by each field for the
score keepers will be dressed up in the coming weeks. The board renovated the
A-field. They will do 1 field a year as finance allows. A new sign will be
placed out by Psalmond Road. Fencing around the septic tank was purchased by
the board and the city will install it. James asked to look at possible
improvements in the bathrooms. A Junior League has been established for 13 and
14 year olds. Regional and National tournaments have also been established for
the Junior League. Please make sure you pass this information along.
Andre: Asked James will the School Board ever replace Mr. Stansfill that was
removed from the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. James will look into
this but he does not have a resolution at this time.
With no further discussion, a motion was made by James adjourn the meeting.
Our next meeting will be February 25th at Fluellen Recreation Center.
Meeting Adjourned 12:57 pm.
