SUBJECT: Donations for Speaker for ?Up and Motivated? Conference, October
2017
INITIATED BY: Public Works Department
Recommendation: Approval is requested to accept donations of up to $30,000 from
various business entities who wish to support an effort to have Herschel Walker
as guest speaker for the 2017 Up and Motivated Conference to take place in
October of that year.
Background: 2017 will be the fifth annual conference organized by Public Works
for many of their employees as well as employees from other departments, to
include Parks and Recreation, METRA, Human Resources and some Civic Center
staff. The donations will be used to cover fees and transportation to have
Herschel Walker as the guest speaker at that conference.
Analysis: Several vendors who regularly support the Up and Motivated
conference have expressed a willingness to donate funds in order to get
Herschel Walker here to speak to operational staff from Public Works and other
Departments.
Financial Considerations: There will be no cost to the city as the cost will
be covered through private donations.
Recommendation/Actions: Approval is requested to accept donations of up to
$30,000 from various business entities in order to have Herschel Walker act as
the guest speaker for the 2017 Up and Motivated Conference.

A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE ACCEPTANCE OF DONATIONS, OF APPROXIMATELY $30,000,
TO ENGAGE HERSCHEL WALKER AS GUEST SPEAKER FOR THE FIFTH ANNUAL PUBLIC WORKS
?UP AND MOTIVATED? CONFERENCE IN 2017, WITH PAYMENT TO BE MADE TO EAGLES TALENT
SPEAKERS BUREAU FOR THAT PURPOSE.
WHEREAS, each year in October Public Works hosts a conference entitled ?Up and
Motivated?, to afford many lower level employees throughout the City, to
include employees from the Parks and Recreation Department, Civic Center,
METRA, Human Resources and other departments, the opportunity to attend
leadership and motivational training in a conference environment at no cost;
and,
WHEREAS, October, 2017, will be the fifth annual conference and the Public
Works organizers wish to renew our dedication to motivating employees toward
self improvement and encourage them to take control of their own careers by
hiring a nationally known and respected speaker for the fifth annual ?Up and
Motivated? conference. This speaker will be Herschel Walker, who is a
respected athlete who rose from a childhood of poverty; and,
WHEREAS, numerous corporate sponsors have stepped forward to support this
effort of a speaker for this event.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, HEREBY RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:
The City Manager and Finance Director are hereby authorized to accept donations
of approximately $30,000 in support of the Fifth Annual Up and Motivated
Conference and to expend monies to cover said event expenses, but in no event
expend in excess of amounts received in donation; the City Manager is further
authorized to make payment to Eagles Talent Speakers Bureau to engage Herschel
Walker as the speaker for the event. Any donated amounts in excess of the
costs of the ?Up and Motivated? conference will be retained in a designated
account to be used for similar events sponsored by Public Works in future years.
