Periodically, we have Department Heads note that their position's salary is
markedly less than Augusta or another similarly sized city. At last year's
Budget meetings, Directors' Salaries came up again and we were asked to look at
it specifically as it related to the City Attorney, who had raised the issue
for discussion.
Given the tight budget scenario the city is facing for FY2014, I will NOT be
recommending any adjustment to any Director's salary. However, I did want to
get Dr. Blair's study to you for your information and review. Dr. Blair will
be available at our next meeting to review his findings and we can ask him any
questions at that time. I will note that it is difficult to compare "apples to
apples" here. Some Departments in different cities are structured differently
with different responsibilities. Often our Directors are wearing many hats
while their counterparts in other cities have delegated duties to different
positions or Authorities.
Again, and I cannot state this clearly enough, I do not intend to recommend any
Director salary adjustment in the Mayor's Budget Letter.
