A RESOLUTION
No.
WHEREAS, House Bill 179 passed in the Georgia General Assembly would protect a
500-foot view zone in front of billboards statewide;
WHEREAS, trees planted in such a view zone after July 1, 2011, even if part of
a non-permitted local beautification plan, would not be protected under the
proposed legislation;
WHEREAS, only ?permitted? trees and trees over 75 years old would receive
protection under the proposed legislation;
WHEREAS, the bill also imposes seven new mandates upon the Georgia DOT without
adequate funding;
WHEREAS, representatives from Columbus Council, Keep Columbus Beautiful
Commission and Trees Columbus, Inc. all opposed House Bill 179 at the
Transportation Committee hearing in Atlanta in February;
WHEREAS, this Council desires to express its opposition to House Bill 179 and
to respectfully request that Governor Nathan Deal veto this legislation.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA HEREBY RESOLVES:
We hereby express our opposition to House Bill 179 passed in the
Georgia General Assembly and urge Governor Nathan Deal to veto this
legislation. Let a copy of this resolution be forwarded by the Clerk of Council
to Governor Nathan Deal.
