PRESS RELEASE ANNOUNCING A PROPOSED PROPERTY TAX INCREASE
The Consolidated Government of Columbus, Georgia, has tentatively adopted a
millage rate, which will require an increase in property taxes in the following
taxing districts:
Urban Services District #1, #5, #6, #7 3.00 percent
Urban Services District #2 2.50 percent
Urban Services District #4 1.00 percent
Business Improvement District #5 2.00 percent
Business Improvement District #6 2.85 percent
Business Improvement District #7 1.00 percent
County-Wide Bonds 1.25 percent
When the total digest of taxable property is prepared, Georgia Law requires
that a rollback millage rate must be computed that will produce the same total
revenue on the current year?s digest that last year?s millage rate would have
produced.
The budget tentatively adopted by the Columbus Consolidated Government requires
that a millage rate higher than the rollback millage rate. Therefore, before
the Columbus Consolidated Government may finalize the tentative budget and set
a final millage rate, Georgia law requires three public hearings to be held to
allow the public an opportunity to express their opinions on the increase.
All concerned citizens are invited to the public hearings on this tax increase
to be held in the Council Chambers on the plaza level of the Government Center
Tower, 100 10th Street, on June 3, 2008 at 9:00 a.m., June 3, 2008 at 6:00 p.m.
and June 10, 2008 at 9:00 a.m.
