Superintendent Report by Steve Brown
The growth on the greens has slowed down. The cutting height is set at .185.
We can always increase the speed of the greens, but never slow them down. The
top cutting height will be at .250. The tees, driving range, practice and
chipping greens have been over seeded. Edging will begin this week on the
bunkers and sand traps. After that completion, dead tree removal will begin.
Regarding the USGA report, a new grinding machine is needed to sharpen the
blades. We have four mowers that have eleven blades per reel. Bull Creek
sends out 30 reels at a cost of $100 per reel. Beginning July 2007, start of a
new fiscal year, Bull Creek is requesting that the capital expenditures be
returned to the budget. The USGA report states that 10-20 acres of mowing of
Bermuda grass rough turf areas be eliminated. Steve Brown feels that for
esthetic purposes we will continue to mow.
Approximately two to four golf carts have the throttle/governor plate adjusted
per week. The golfer is able to adjust the mechanism to control speed of the
cart. This cost is an additional expense that we would like to eliminate.
Robert Francis, irrigation specialist, resigned on October 13th. We have this
position posted with the city. The third guard position is still open. Willie
Hill has someone in mind that is qualified and currently working for the YDC.
This full-time position pays approximately $26,500 per year.
Godwin Creek
Thirty thousand dollars have been received in grants. The golf course is in
great shape. A five-week Middle School Program ended last week. Approximately
75 kids participated. The First Tee will begin an annual fund program. A
mailer will be sent to approximately 2000 addresses. Another USGA grant has
been applied for. The First Tee received $3500 from the justice department
last February and another grant of $10,000 will be applied for.
Director of Golf
Bull Creek has had two good months. Revenue is up as well as the expenses
being down. The snack bar is offering a better product and service. The
original outlay of food/beverages has paid for itself. A GPS ?sky caddy? will
be offered in January 2007 for approximately $180.00. This will be an upgraded
system for less than half the price.
Oxbow Creek?s revenue is better this year compared to last year. The $1 day
that is offered on Tuesday and Thursday is very successful. Floyd Washington
asked Mr. Milam if he heard about Oxbow Creek?s additional 9 holes.
Apparently, no grant will be awarded if you do not own the land and it will
cost over 2 ? million to cap the land (approximately 77 acres).
Mark Immelman, Columbus State University Head Golf Coach, has requested a
long-term lease (7 years) from Bull Creek for the use of the driving range.
The university is considering spending $50,000 to $60,000 to re-do the building
that sits on Golf Tech side. Currently, CSU pays Bull Creek $11,000 yearly
for the use of the driving range and $1,200 to $1,500 per year for CSU students
to take golf class lessons. Mr. Milam is currently re-working the lease.
Donald Clack adjourned the meeting at 4:49 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Wilkeson, Secretary
