FEBRUARY 12, 2008 COMMISSIONERS MEETING MINUTES



Commissioners present: Earnest Baulkmon, Beth Burgin, Ann Davis, Julie Bray,

Jack Collins, Bill Consoletti, Christine Dawson, Marie Lewis, Priscilla

Marshall, Pat Killough, Dr. B. J. McBride, Michael Moshell, Jimmy Motos, Lynna

Spencer, Stan Stovall, Larry Trammell.



Also present: Dr. George Stanton, Lonya Jackson Sarden, John Brent, Gloria

Weston- Smart and Carolyn Rucker.



Commissioners not present: Bill Green, Sandra Mason, Greg Paul, Robert

Watkins, Sherrylrae Wicker, Frank Porter, Doris Estell, Susi Hamlett and Cheryl

Johnson.



CALL TO ORDER

The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Stan Stovall.



APPROVAL OF MINUTES FOR DECEMBER 2007 MEETING

Minutes were read and approved.



TREASURER?S REPORT

The Treasurer?s Report was given by Gloria Weston-Smart in the absence of

Commissioner Greg Paul. The report will be filed for audit.



PETITIONS & COMMUNICATIONS

The Georgia Department of Community Affairs has awarded a grant to Keep

Columbus Beautiful Commission. The grant is called ?Away from home?, and is a

trailer to be pulled behind a vehicle. Inside the trailer is recycling

containers to be taken to different sites and events around town, and set up to

promote a cleaner environment.



Solid Waste Trust Fund Re-authorization, Bill SB399 is up for lobby. A fee

from the sale of each tire goes into the fund. The ?Litter. It Costs You? is

funded from the Solid Waste Trust Fund.



Proclamations for Arbor Day and the Great American Cleanup were received from

Columbus Consolidated Government at a Council meeting in February. The Arbor

Day Celebration is Saturday, February 16, 2008 from 11:00 a.m. until 1 p.m.

This is in celebration of Georgia being a Tree City USA for 30 years. There

will be a presentation to students who won the Arbor Day artwork contest.

Also, the bucket trucks will be on site and crafts are planned for the

children.



The Great American Cleanup will be March 13 and 14, 2008. The students will be

encouraged to cleanup their school campuses on March 13, 2008. On Saturday,

March 14, 2008, the public and organizations are encouraged to join in the

clean up. Gloves and trash bags will be provided. Gloria Weston-Smart and

Lonya Sarden went before Council to ask the Councilors to participate in the

Great American Cleanup in their District. They were given gloves, bags and a

sign up sheet. They were asked to choose a weekend convenient for them and get

people to sign up. Gloria will go back to Council and pick up the sign up

sheets.



NEW BUSINESS

A Budget Request has been submitted to CCG. There have been no increases in the

budget in 4 years. Gloria Weston-Smart has requested that the budget be in the

same amount it was 4 years ago. Keep Columbus Beautiful Commission office

needs another part-time employee.



The tentative 2008-09 Calendar was given out at the meeting. Gloria stated it

is a work in progress and some changes will probably be made.



Nominating Committee: Stan Stovall is the Committee Chairman. Beth Burgin

reminded everyone that Keep Columbus Beautiful Commission is coming to a new

year, and new Commissioners must be nominated. Some Commissioners can remain

on for another term, and some must leave the Commission. Those leaving were

asked to suggest someone to take their place. Those Commissioners who can stay

on are encouraged to do so.



New IRS Filing Requirement for Small Organizations began in 2008. An

explanation of the new filing was given out to the Commissioners.



Earth Day ? Wally the Waterdrop Coloring Books were be given out to the 3rd

graders at the schools in celebration of Earth Day.



KCBC PROGRAMS

Tour of Gardens: Commissioner Beth Burgin gave an update on the progress of

the Tour of Gardens to be held Saturday, May 3, 2008. The gardens are all

planned and the flower show will be at Spring Harbor. There will be a plant

sale at Brookstone School. The goal is to have the tickets ready to give out

at the Commissioners April meeting. Each Commissioner is asked to sell 10

tickets, and also help staff the gardens.



Awards Luncheon: The Luncheon date is Thursday, May 8, 2008. Everything is

going as planned. Miss Georgia will be the emcee. The ticket prices for the

luncheon will remain the same. Each Commissioner is asked to pay for one

student lunch which is $12.00.
