Agenda Item # 3
Columbus Consolidated Government
Council Meeting
January 8, 2019
Agenda Report # 79
TO: Mayor and Council
SUBJECT: Georgia Trauma Commission ? Georgia Trauma Care Network Commission
Grant
INITIATED BY: Columbus Department of Fire and EMS
Recommendation: Approval is requested to apply for and accept a grant in the
amount of $8,644.33, or as otherwise awarded, from the Georgia Trauma
Commission ? Georgia Trauma Care Network Commission, with no local match
required and amend the Multi-Government Fund by the award amount.
Background: Funds have been allocated to the Georgia Trauma Commission for the
purchase of trauma equipment. In 2007, the Georgia Legislature through senate
Bill 60 established the Georgia Trauma Care Network Commission. In 2012, the
Georgia Legislature through SB 489 amended SB 60 and thus O.C.G.A 31-11-100 to
require annual reporting of the Commission?s activities to both House and
Senate Committees on Health and Human services. Trauma continues to be the
leading cause of death between the ages of 1 -44. Overall, injury is the 4th
leading cause of death in the United states, but life ? years lost are greater
from injury than from three other leading causes of death combined, which are
heart disease, cancer and stroke. The grant funds will be used to purchase
equipment that will be used to better equip Columbus Fire and EMS in the
treatment of trauma patients.
Analysis: The Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services will purchase
equipment with funds being reimbursed by the state.
Financial Considerations: The grant is for equipment that will enhance the
treatment of the trauma patient amounting to $8,644.33, with no matching funds
required.
Legal Considerations: The Consolidated Government of Columbus is eligible to
receive the funds.
Recommendation/Action: Approval is requested to apply for and accept a grant of
$8,644.33 from the Georgia Trauma Commission ? Georgia Trauma Care Network
Commission and amend the Multi-Governmental Fund by the amount of the award.
