MINUTES # 34-07
The Columbus, Georgia, Board of Tax Assessors met Monday, August 27, 2007 at
9:00AM with Chairman William Braxton, Assessors Lawton Grantham, Richard
Stallings, Ann Grantham and Pat Hunter present. Also present was Chief
Appraiser Betty J. Middleton.
Assessor Lawton Grantham made the motion to approve Min#33-07; Assessor Pat
Hunter seconded the motion; motion carried unanimously.
The Board signed assessment corrections for real estate.
Met with Mr. Tysinger regarding the valuation on his property located at 6773
Bridge Way (Parcel ID 192 017 014). Mr. Tysinger stated the bonus room above
the garage was not a bedroom. He said it is used as a storage room, there is no
plumbing. He felt that with what he paid for the house and what he spent,
$335,000 would be a fair value. The Board delayed their decision and requested
the Residential Division Manager to review all data for the next meeting.
Met with Mr. and Mrs. Hassel regarding personal property account # 06025801 and
06097201. Mrs. Hassel said she acquired a Business License in 1999 with two
other ladies, but never went into business. She said she closed the Business
License on April 17, 2000, but acquired another Business License in her name
only on April 17, 2000. Mrs. Hassel was mandatory assessed in 2001 and the
value continued to carry over; the business license was not closed. Mrs. Hassel
said she did not realize she should have closed her business license when she
closed her business in 2003. Mrs. Hassel stated she never had much merchandise,
mostly catalog business and what was there was returned. Assessor Lawton
Grantham made the motion to assess only the years 2001 and 2002 and remove the
assessments for 2003, 2004 and 2005; Assessor Ann Grantham seconded the motion.
Motion carried.
Met with Ms. Thomas regarding personal property account # 05665801. Ms. Thomas
stated she opened her business at 4119 Holly Ave in 1997, but closed it at that
location because she did not feel safe in the neighborhood. She said she
acquired a new certification of occupancy for 5203 14th Ave and moved her
business there. She said the neighborhood was not any better and she closed her
business there in 2000. The Board requested Ms. Thomas to furnish them with
final utility bills or a letter from the owner of the property when she vacated
the building.

The Board requested Res Div Mgr Bob O?Brien to review the information furnished
by the taxpayer for Parcel ID 170 007 008 and bring back his recommendation of
value for 2007
Met with Commercial Division Manager Linda King, reviewed and approved the
following:

Met with Personal Property Division Manager Oliver Juhan, reviewed and approved
the following:

Pers Prop Div Mgr Oliver Juhan apprised the Board that he and Auditor Randy
Dawson have an appointment with Mr. Murray Williams to review his boat for the
2007 appeal. The Board asked Pers Prop Div Mgr Oliver Juhan questions
regarding the valuation method for all boats.
