MINUTES
January 27, 2016

Members Absent: Andre Dye, Mike Peacock, Willie Dickerson
City Staff Present: Teresa Snellings, Becky Glisson, Tommy Groce, James

Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Irene Pate at 12:10
Roll was taken.
Due to not having a quorum we cannot approve the minutes for the September 30,
2015 and
October 28, 2015 meetings.
Teresa made note that the minutes of the October 28, 2015 meeting were
incorrect in that Andre Dye came in late and therefore was in attendance.
Corrected minutes will be sent out.
Becky informed the board of new member Gary Bruce that was appointed by Glenn
Davis. Mr. Bruce has not been sworn in and will be invited to next meeting.
This leaves us with three vacancies.
Becky introduced our Budget Analyst, Embry Moore, to the board who gave them a
brief overview of our department budget. Expenditures and revenues are
tracking good as to where we should be at this time of year.
Director/Staff Update
Teresa Snellings (Recreation Services): Our basketball league has kicked off
and it is going great. We are partnered with Phenix City and Girls, Inc. Games
are on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights and are held at Shirley Winston
Park, Frank Chester Recreation Center and in Phenix City. Teresa will give
Becky a schedule to give to the board. (Please see below)

We are trying to ease into track next and we are working on that program. We
want to keep the kids interested and active.
Empty Bowl is coming up and we are working on that. Trying to get donations
for soup right now and other things lined up.
James said that it would be very nice if the board could volunteer in some
capacity for this event. They just need to get with Teresa.
Irene Pate mentioned going to the Food Bank and how impressed they were with
it. Stated that they give out approximately 7,000 boxes of hot food around
town to people who would not normally have a hot meal
Our Easter Egg Hunt will not be held as usual and will be held at the Columbus
Aquatic Center. Becky can fill you in more on that.
Becky gave a brief overview of the hunt and the activities that we will have.
It will be March the 12th with registration at 9:30 and the activities from
10:00 until 2:00. Becky encouraged the board to come to the event.
Shelley Tippens (Community Schools): February 12th is our 7th annual Valentine
Dance for our after school program participants. It is from 7pm to 9pm at
Comer Gym.
Spring Break Camp is March 21st-27th.
Tommy Groce (Park Services): We have the Peach Belt Softball Tournament this
weekend. Not a huge tournament and will only use probably two fields.
We have done a lot of spot work on trails and other areas damaged by the flood
such as Heath Park, Cooper Creek and Britt David Park.
Soccer opens on February 1st and High School on February 8th.
Little League has also started up and are in their first and second weeks.
**Derrick Greene came in late so we now have a quorum. Minutes of September
27, 2015 and October 28, 2015 were approved and we are up to date.
Becky Glisson (Finance Manager): We have swim meets at the Aquatic Center on
the following dates:
January 29-31st, 2016 Hurricanes Groundhog Invitational
February 29-March 5th, 2016 NAIA Swimming and Diving Championships
March 18-20th, 2016 USA Swimming State Meet
April 16th, 2016 Special Olympics Invitational
TBD Hurricanes Long Course Meet
We are working on our FY17 budget and face many challenges to include the
Columbus Aquatic Center and Cooper Creek Tennis Center.
James Worsley (Director): Explained the Columbus Aquatic Center Task Force to
the board. The task force includes Irene Pate, Muscogee County School District
Hurricanes and other citizens.
Open discussion was held with the board and staff about the Columbus Aquatic
Center and issues it is facing and other issues facing the department.
Questions arose about Silver Sneakers program, selling of Golden Park and other
issues. Discussion was held about our upcoming NAIA, getting with CSU Athletic
Director about partnerships and other issues relating to the budget.
With no further discussion, the meeting was adjourned.
Our next meeting will be February 24th, 2016 at Fluellen Recreation Center.
