A RESOLUTION

No.



WHEREAS, Mr. Walter T. Lunsford, Sr. of Columbus died on December 28, 2006 at

the age of 90;



WHEREAS, Mr. Lunsford was born on March 16, 1916 and was preceded in

death by his sister, Lula M. Lunsford Odom, his devoted wife of over sixty-two

years, Sally M. Lunsford and their son, Watson Thomas Lunsford;



WHEREAS, he was a 1933 honor graduate of Spencer High School and attended Fisk

University and the University of Chicago;



WHEREAS, he was a prominent businessman and worked in real estate development,

as owner and operator of Fox Deluxe Wholesale Beer Distributing Company and

owned and operated Checker, Blue Bird and Red Bird Taxicab companies beginning

in 1944 for 32 years;



WHEREAS, he also operated Pierce Amusement Company and the Six and Eighth Auto

Service, brought notable entertainers such as Cellastine Tuxedo Band, Erskine

Hawkins Band and the Ben Slaughter Band to Columbus, and his family worked with

Primus King and others to secure the right of African-Americans to vote in

Georgia;



WHEREAS, Mr. Lunsford was a former member of St. James AME Church and for the

last 20 years, he has been a active member of the Church of the Holy Family;



Whereas, he is survived by his children, Elizabeth Duncan (John), Lula Huff

(Charles), Mary Kaido (Michael), Walter Lunsford Jr., Joseph Lunsford

(Cecilia), William Odom Jr. (Rochelle), Sally Varner (Alphonso), Alice Mclendon

(Harold), Loretta Ayers (Tyrone), Beatrice Wilkins (Gary) and his

grandchildren: Sharonica, Jennifer, Walter and Watson Lunsford; Tamara Huff;

Michael III, Mary and Martin Kaido; Fatima, Theresa and Joanna Lunsford;

William III and Quinn Odom; Sally Varner; Alisia, Natalie, Harold, Jr., Warren

and Bryant Mclendon; Kimberly and Angela Ayers; and Loren and Gary Wilkins

Jr.



NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA HEREBY RESOLVES:



We hereby express our sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to the family of

Mr. Walter T. Lunsford, Sr. His service and contributions to the Columbus

community will long be remembered. Let a copy of this resolution be forwarded

to the family of Mr. Walter T. Lunsford, Sr.
