NO.



WHEREAS, Horace King (1807-1887), a master bridge builder in Georgia and

surrounding states as well as designer, architect, engineer, politician,

businessman, census taker, and magistrate, was involved in the construction of

numerous bridges spanning the

Chattahoochee River near Columbus including the Bryant Street Bridge (now 13th

Street) in 1858, the Franklin Street Bridge (now 14th Street) in 1862, the

Muscogee Railroad Bridge in 1855, the Mobile and Girard Railroad Bridge in

1870, and the Dillingham Street Bridge in 1870;



WHEREAS, Horace King pursued his main trade with vigor both as a slave and as a

free man until his death in LaGrange, Georgia in 1887;



WHEREAS, this Council deems it appropriate that Horace King?s achievements in

Columbus, Georgia be permanently memorialized near the site of these early

bridges over the Chattahoochee River;



WHEREAS, there is presently a bronze marker under the Dillingham Street Bridge

at the Columbus Riverwalk announcing the achievements of Horace King;



WHEREAS, the street level of the current Dillingham Street Bridge, designed and

built by Horace King, is a suitable location for another permanent marker

naming the Dillingham Street Bridge as the Horace King Memorial Bridge;



WHEREAS, the Columbus, Georgia Board of Honor has recommended that the current

Dillingham Street Bridge be renamed as the Horace King Memorial Bridge.



NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA HEREBY RESOLVES:



We hereby designate the existing Dillingham Street Bridge in Columbus, Georgia

as the Horace King Memorial Bridge and authorize the Director of the Department

of Public Works to consult with the Historic Chattahoochee Commission and the

Historic Columbus Foundation and to install an appropriate marker bearing this

name. Resolution No. 149-88 is hereby rescinded and repealed in its entirety.

Let a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Sam Wellborn, Georgia

Department of Transportation Board Member, the Historic Chattahoochee

Commission and the Historic Columbus Foundation.
