Agenda Item # 2
Columbus Consolidated Government
Council Meeting
October 11, 2016
Agenda Report # 48
TO: Mayor and Council
SUBJECT: Lease Agreement ? 921 Lawyers Lane
INITIATED BY: Community Reinvestment
Recommendation: Approval is requested authorizing the City Manager to renew a
lease agreement with Safehouse Ministries (formally known as Chattahoochee
Valley Jail Ministry) to lease the building at 921 Lawyers Lane for $1 per year
for an additional five (5) years.
Background: The City owns the property located at 921 Lawyers Lane. It has
been leased since October 11, 2011 by the Chattahoochee Valley Jail Ministry
for $1 per year to provide housing to disadvantaged women and women with
children. The lease agreement expired on October 10, 2016 and Safehouse
Ministries (formally known as the Chattahoochee Valley Jail Ministry) has
requested to renew the lease for an additional five years.
Analysis: If the City does not renew the lease with Safehouse Ministries, then
the organization will no longer have an affordable place to house disadvantaged
women and women with children. Since 2011, 516 women and 132 children have been
provided shelter through this facility, and over half of those have left to
permanent housing. The tenant will be responsible for maintenance of the
building, utilities, and must maintain hazard and liability insurance.
Financial Considerations: There will be no cost burden to the City. The tenant
will be responsible for all maintenance and utilities, and will be required to
maintain hazard and liability insurance.
Legal Considerations: Any lease agreement involving the City requires Council
approval.
Recommendations/ Actions: Approve the Resolution authorizing the City Manager
to renew a lease agreement with Safehouse Ministries to lease the building at
921 Lawyers Lane for $1 per year for a period of five (5) years.
