THE GREATER COLUMBUS GOLF AUTHORITY
MINUTES OF MEETING
August 28, 2007
The Greater Columbus Golf Authority held the scheduled monthly meeting at Bull
Creek Golf Course. Members present were Floyd Washington, Nancy Wilkeson, Nan
Hopkins, Willie Hill, Aubry Burt, Donald Clack and June Holder. Staff members
present were John Milam and Steve Brown. Richard Hagler and Michael
Silverstein had an excused absence.
Minutes of the June 26, 2007 meeting were approved as presented. Motion made
by Nan Hopkins and seconded by Floyd Washington. There was no meeting in July.
Old Business
A motion was made by Donald Clack to keep Richard Hagler as Chairman and elect
Rev. Willie Hill as Co-Chairman and Nan Hopkins as Secretary. Motion was
seconded. Motion passed.
No plans have been received from Columbus State or Mark Immelman for the
improvements to Golf Tech.
New Business
In order to meet our fiscal budget and not lay-off any employees, Bull Creek
will increase green fees by $1.00. This should increase Bull Creek?s revenue
by $18,000 to $20,000. Oxbow Creek will raise their cart fees by $1.00 and
range balls by $.50. Green fees at Oxbow Creek will not be raised. The price
increase will be effective October 1st. Donald Clack suggested that we look at
these figures in six months to make sure they are covering the employee?s
raises. There is still a concern that the mechanic at Bull Creek is
underpaid. Steve Brown and John Milam will get together before the next
scheduled meeting to discuss his salary and bring their findings to the
authority.
Superintendent Report by Steve Brown
Patrick O?Brien, Southeast Director of Greens Section, paid a visit to Bull
Creek and Oxbow Creek on August 20th. Both courses need to increase their
organic matter dilution (add sand to the greens by surface topdressing and core
aeration). A report from
Mr. O?Brien will be forthcoming.
The height of the greens mower will be adjusted in September. The course is
being watered every other day to conserve water. We have a 30-day supply
left. The new greens mower for Bull Creek and Oxbow Creek should be delivered
this week.
Our new prison guard, Mr. Hartman, will retake the shooting range test. Due to
vacation time, we will have half of our inmate crew for two weeks in
September.
Godwin Creek
The First Tee had a busy summer. There were nine weeks of camps. Over 50% of
the kids involved were on scholarships. The fall program will begin in mid
September. It will consist of 4 afternoon classes and a class on Saturday.
Rudy Thorne is no longer the Director of Programs. Dave Davis has stepped in
to teach. He has completed level I of coaches training.
Director of Golf
Bull Creek is off to a good start. Revenue is up about $23,000 compared to
this time last year. Oxbow Creek is about the same as last year. The city is
in the process of wiring the cart barn for electric carts that will arrive in
2009. Georgia Power did a study stating that Bull Creek will save
approximately $40,000 per year by using electric carts instead of gas carts.
Mats are scheduled for the range, which should save Bull Creek between $14,000
and $15,000 (the cost of over-seeding).
Donald Clack adjourned the meeting at 4:37 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Wilkeson, Secretary
