SUBJECT: Cell Tower Lease Renewal - 8889 River Road
INITIATED BY: Community Reinvestment Department
Recommendation: Approval is requested to authorize the City Manager to execute
a five (5) year property lease renewal with Verizon Wireless for the purpose of
leasing space at 8889 River Road to operate and maintain an existing
telecommunications tower.
Background: Verizon Wireless is currently leasing space at 8889 River Road
for a cell phone tower. The original lease was approved by Council on March 31,
1998 per Resolution No. 163-98. This will be the 4th renewal term for this
contract. The lease expires on April 30, 2018 and Verizon Wireless is
requesting to extend the term of the lease for an additional five (5) year
period from May 1, 2018 to April 30, 2023.
Analysis: The request is for a renewal of a lease agreement. The cell tower
already exists at the site and was previously reviewed and approved by all
parties. The lease renewal amount will be increased to $34,419.44 per year
which is received in quarterly payments of $8,604.86. There is an option to
extend the term of this Agreement, with Council approval, for one (1)
additional consecutive five (5) year period.
Financial Considerations: The City will receive $34,419.44 per year in
quarterly payments for this five (5) year term.
Legal Considerations: Any lease agreement involving the City requires Council
approval.
Recommendations/Actions: Approve a Resolution authorizing the City Manager to
execute a five (5) year property lease renewal with Verizon Wireless for the
purpose of leasing space at 8889 River Road to operate and maintain an existing
telecommunications tower.

A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO EXECUTE A FIVE (5) YEAR PROPERTY
LEASE RENEWAL WITH VERIZON WIRELESS FOR THE PURPOSE OF LEASING SPACE AT 8889
RIVER ROAD TO OPERATE AND MAINTAIN AN EXISTING TELECOMMUNICATIONS TOWER.
WHEREAS, Verizon Wireless desires to renew a lease agreement for space at 8889
River Road; and,
WHEREAS, the purpose of the lease renewal is to operate and maintain an
existing telecommunications tower that provides cellular telephone service to
the area; and,
WHEREAS, the lease renewal period will be for a period of five (5) years; and,
WHEREAS, the lease renewal will provide the City $34,419.44 in rent per year
for this five (5) year term; and,
WHEREAS, the executed lease agreement will become part of this resolution by
reference and will be filed with the Clerk of Council.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, HEREBY RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:
That the City Manager is hereby authorized to execute a five (5) year property
lease renewal with Verizon Wireless for the purpose of leasing space at 8889
River Road to operate and maintain an existing telecommunications tower.
