Mayor's Institute on City Design
You may remember that in September I was invited to attend the Mayor's
Institute on City Design. We received the Final Report before the holidays and
I wanted to forwarded it to you FYI. I referenced this at the Bibb City "Let's
Talk with the Mayor" where several of you were in attendance. It was very
interesting and we certainly received the "Best in Show" accolades.
Basically, the Institute invited Columbus to participate and asked for 4 to 5
proposals of projects the city was interested in developing, but felt there was
some sort of stumbling blocks.
Mayor Joe Riley of Charleston hosts the Conference and experts from around the
country attend. Our Planning Department presented several distressed areas
prior to the Conference - areas where the city owns a lot of land and needs
some revitalization effort. The Institute chose the blighted area north of the
Total System campus and south of Bibb City along 2nd Avenue. Because it runs
along the River, it has potential, but it also has plenty of stumbling blocks.
Here is the summary of the Institute's thoughts on the area. (Liz - Please
see that this is put in Council's package - FYI). Thanks.
