Subject: Saving The City Money - A Few Novel Concepts
Dear Honorable Mayor Tomlinson;
I just read with some degree of shock, the suggestions put forth by the F.O.P.
regarding potential cost saving measures the city could adopt. May I add a few
others?
1) Shut down ALL under-utilized parks and sell the properties to private
developers -- in my humble opinion, this city does NOT need 60 plus parks.
2) Regarding the vacant rooms created by the recent migration to the 311
Center? How about renting those spaces to restaurant chains like Subway and the
like, or perhaps even a gift shop type.
3) Install motion detector light switches in ALL government buildings.
4) Consolidate all photocopiers (both color and black and white) to a few
select locations (yes, this will probably be inconvenient and may cause a few
groans, but a healthy city employee shouldn't mind walking a few extra steps to
go to a copier in a centralized location on their floor).
5) The "three bids, take the lowest bid offered" by private firms the city
seeks out to do occasional work? Instead of the lowest bid, take the middle
bid....this will hopefully, help reduce the number of times the city gets the
short end of the stick by unscrupulous persons wanting to get by with inferior
work.
I put forth a couple of these ideas while I worked for the city; they were shot
down by some as "nickel and dime" efforts and consequently went nowhere. I can
tell you, nickels and dimes add up over time.
For what it's worth department...
Respectfully,
Jeffrey A. Nix
