A RESOLUTION
No.
WHEREAS, it has come to the attention of the Columbus Council that the United
States Postal Service (USPS) has served notice of its intent to conduct Area
Mail Processing Studies (AMP) to study the feasibility of consolidated mail
processing services throughout the nation including in twelve Georgia cities;
WHEREAS, one such AMP would study the impact of consolidating the services
provided at Columbus, Georgia CSMPC into the Montgomery, Alabama operation;
WHEREAS, the closure of this facility would result in the loss of more than
fifty (50) jobs, with average salaries of $60,000 each, located in Columbus,
Georgia;
WHEREAS, in order to make the studied closures feasible the USPS has proposed
changes to the Service Standards set forth in 39 CFR Part 121 to eliminate the
expectation of overnight service for first-class mail and periodicals, and to
reduce the two-day delivery range of these classes of mail and enlarge the
three-day delivery range;
WHEREAS, this Council desires that the local congressional delegation inquire
into these matters and take all action necessary to protect the quality of
postal service for the citizens of Columbus, and to protect jobs in Columbus,
Georgia.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA HEREBY RESOLVES:
We hereby request that the members of the local congressional delegation
inquire into the matter and seek a moratorium against USPS facility closures as
well as addressing the proposed reduction in service standards. Let a copy of
this resolution be forwarded to each member of the local congressional
delegation by the Clerk of Council.
