THE GREATER COLUMBUS GOLF AUTHORITY
MINUTES OF MEETING
August 25, 2009
The Greater Columbus Golf Authority held the scheduled monthly meeting at Bull
Creek Golf Course. Members present were Aubry Burt, Nancy Wilkeson, Floyd
Washington, Carl Williams, Richard Hagler and Rhudine Nelson. Michael
Silverstein had an excused absence. Rev. Willie Hill and Rudy Allen had an
unexcused absence. Staff members present were John Milam and Steve Brown.
Minutes of the July 28, 2009 meeting were approved as presented. Motion made
by Carl Williams and seconded by Aubry Burt.
Old Business
Columbus State University is aware of the Authority?s position of not
re-negotiating the terms of their lease for the use of Golf Tech.
New Business
Rhudine Nelson asked about the availability of ice from the machine at Bull
Creek. In the past, it was free to all golfers. If you bring your beverages
to the course from the outside, bring your own ice; if not, ice will cost you
$1.00. If beverages are purchased from the snack bar, you are able to obtain
free ice from the machine. In the past, Bull Creek has had to pay for ice when
the machine runs dry.
Superintendent Report by Steve Brown
Mr. Patrick O?Brien, the USGA agronomist, visited the courses on August 10,
2009. The following are recommendations that he made during his visit:
Use a finer sand for top-dressing the greens
Begin a verti-cutting program
Increase the Primo rate for the greens
Apply different paint to the greens in the winter
Use different nozzles for the sprayer
Drainage issues
Use a different herbicide program to prevent weeds
Will send Bull Creek ideas regarding the pull-off areas around the tees
The following work was done at Oxbow Creek. The well pump had a 3? hole in the
casing and has been repaired at a cost of $1,300 at Oxbow Creek. The pump
shaft has also been repaired at a cost of $1,400. The foot valve replacement
costs were $600. Steve mentioned that these parts normally last ten years
Nancy Wilkeson asked Steve about the new flag sticks. Some of the flag sticks
have been painted black, while others have had a black tape applied to the
bottom of the stick. Both have made visible improvements to the courses.
Having the black paint or tape instead of the yellow color flagsticks allows
Steve to paint the greens and not worry about the overspray on the stick.
Godwin Creek
A meeting is scheduled tomorrow, August 26th to discuss the future of the First
Tee Program. YMCA is still interested in running the program with Nan Hopkins
overseeing it.
Director of Golf
Mr. Milam presented the fiscal reports from both courses. Revenue was up at
Oxbow Creek and Bull Creek compared to the same time last year. Oxbow Creek
increased by $2,000 and over $5,000 for Bull Creek. Revenues are much better
without the rain. Golfers from Lakeside (Phenix City) and Woodland Hills are
continuing to play at Bull Creek because those courses are not in the best
shape. Even, Maple Ridge has lost some greens. It is a testament to Steve
Brown for the remarkable job he does at Bull Creek.
Mr. Richard Hagler brought to the attention of the authority members that we
need to set a good example while playing golf. The same rules that apply to
other golfers also apply to all board members. As a member of the golf
authority, do not take advantage of your position on the board.
Mr. Milam was asked to step out of the meeting so the authority members could
discuss a personnel issue.
Richard Hagler adjourned the meeting at 4:18 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Wilkeson, Secretary
