Agenda Report # 630

TO: Mayor and Council

SUBJECT: Governor's Office of Highway Safety- Small Grant Application

INITIATED BY: Marshal's Office

Recommendation: Approval is requested to submit an application, and if

approved, accept a small grant for $15,000 from the Governor's Office of

Highway Safety for the Marshal's Office to purchase supplies and equipment to

be used to enforce traffic laws and educate/train the public in highway

safety. Approval is also requested to amend the Multi-Governmental Fund by a

like amount.

Background: The purpose of the program is to enhance traffic enforcement

efforts in Columbus and the West Central Georgia region of the state. Funding

for this program is provided by the Governor's Office of Highway Safety in the

form of a one-time small grant award up to $15,000 for the period of October 1,

2011 - September 30, 2012.

Analysis: The grants awarded in the initiative are limited to a maximum of

$15,000. No matching funds are required. Each project will be funded for a

period of twelve (12) months from the designated starting date of October 1,

2011. Locally, Captain Curtis Lockette will manage the grant. The grant

requests approval to purchase $15,000 in supplies and equipment such as tint

meters, flashlights, portable breath testers, brochures, and other items to

enforce traffic laws and educate and train the public in highway safety.

Projects under this category are not eligible for continuation funding.

Financial Considerations: The proposed resolution will authorize the

acceptance of a small grant up to $15,000 of State Monies. There is no matching

fund requirement; therefore, there will be no impact on the general fund by

accepting this grant.

Projected Annual Fiscal Impact Statement: There will be no fiscal impact on

the general fund.

Legal Considerations: Approval of the grant will obligate the City to all

conditions of the grant award.

Recommendations/ Actions: Authorize the submission and if approved the

acceptance of a Small Grant for $15,000 from the Governor's Office of Highway

safety for the Muscogee County Marshal's Office and amend the

Multi-Governmental Fund (0216) by a like amount.
