SUBJECT: Department of Energy Propane Corridor Development Grant Program



INITIATED BY: Muscogee County Sheriff?s Office



Recommendation: Approval is requested to submit an application and, if

approved, accept a $28,500 grant, or the amount approved, from James Madison

University/ Virginia Clean Cities Coalition for the Department of Energy

Propane Corridor Development Grant Program via the American Recovery and

Reinvestment Act of 2009 for vehicle propane conversion for 20 Muscogee County

Sheriff?s Office vehicles and amend the Multi- Governmental Fund by the amount

awarded.



Background: Funds have been allocated to James Madison University from the

American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to convert vehicles to propane

powered, install refueling infrastructure to support each participating fleet,

and collect/ report related data to the transition and operation of propane

fleets throughout the Southeast. The Muscogee County Sheriff?s Office is

eligible for $28,500.



Analysis: Funding of this grant will improve the air quality of the Southeast

region, our dependence on foreign energy, vehicle longevity, and vehicle

maintenance costs.



Financial Considerations: The grant is for $28,500, or the amount approved,

with no matching funds. The funds will be used to convert 20 Muscogee County

Sheriff?s Office vehicles to propane bi-fuel vehicles.



Legal Considerations: The Columbus Consolidated Government has been notified

of its eligibility to receive the funds.



Recommendations/ Actions: Authorize to submit an application, and if

approved, accept a grant from James Madison University/ Virginia Clean Cities

Coalition for the Department of Energy Propane Corridor Development Grant

Program via the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO SUBMIT AN APPLICATION, AND IF

AWARDED, ACCEPT A $28,500 GRANT FROM JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY/ VIRGINIA CLEAN

CITIES COALITION FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY PROPANE CORRIDOR DEVELOPMENT

GRANT PROGRAM VIA THE AMERICAN RECOVERY AND REINVESTMENT ACT OF 2009 FOR

VEHICLE PROPANE CONVERSION FOR 20 MUSCOGEE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE VEHICLES AND

AMEND THE MULTI-GOVERNMENTAL FUND BY THE AMOUNT OF THE AWARD.

WHEREAS, the grant period runs from September 6, 2009 to December 6, 2013.

NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, HEREBY RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:



That the City Manager is hereby authorized to submit an application and, if

approved, accept a $28,500 grant from James Madison University/ Virginia Clean

Cities Coalition for the Department of Energy Propane Corridor Development

Grant Program via the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 for

vehicle propane conversion for 20 Muscogee County Sheriff?s Office vehicles and

amend the Multi- Governmental Fund by the amount awarded.
