Tree Board Meeting

December 9, 2009



Welcome

? Scott Jones welcomed the other Tree Board members in attendance: Gloria

Weston-Smart, Milton Anthony, Steve Smith, Claudya Muller, Dorothy McDaniel,

Hal Averett.

Old Business

? Minutes of the previous board meeting were approved.

New Business

? Tree Board members welcomed new member Claudya Muller

? Tree Board members were asked to update contact information on the master

list.

Veterans Parkway

? A ceremonial groundbreaking event will be held for the Veterans Parkway

Streetscape and Pedestrian Enhancement project on Thursday, Dec ember 17th. The

Tree Board will be a part of the program and present on the stage

Tree Planting 2010

? Scott Jones reported that the Urban Forestry and Beautification Division will

plant approximately 800 trees this year in two phases

? Dorothy McDaniel announced that a Public Service Announcement produced by

Trees Columbus and the Georgia Forestry Commission promotes the 311

right-of-way tree request program.

Arbor Day 2010

? The Tree Board is again partnering with Keep Columbus Beautiful, Urban

Forestry and Beautification, and Trees Columbus to host an Arbor Day

celebration on February 20, 2010. Columbus is being designated a Tree City USA

for the 32nd straight year. Oxbow Meadows, Georgia Power, The UGA Co-Operative

Extension Service, and the Air Quality Alliance of the Chattahoochee Valley are

all participating in the event to be held at the Lakebottom Band Shelter from

11am-1pm. Urban Forestry and Beautification, Trees Columbus, and Georgia Power

will all provide seedlings

? Trees Columbus will host the official Arbor Day tree planting on February

20th from 9am-11pm at Dinglewood Park. The planting will focus on understory

trees with a few canopy trees planted near the top of the hill.

Riverdale Update

? Hal Averett reported that tree plantings will be held in Riverdale and

Porterdale cemetery on February 27th. Trees have been ordered and Hands on the

Valley will assist with volunteer coordination.

New Business

? Ken Henson metioned SB 164, legislation that would allow for increased

cutting of public trees for viewing billboards. Mr. Henson announced a council

briefing on the issue. Ken Henson, Dorothy McDaniel and Scott Jones agreed to

coordinate on the council presentation

2010 Meeting Dates

? The Tree Board reviewed meeting dates for 2010 and agreed to change the

meeting time to 11am:

June 9, 2010

September 8, 2010

December 8, 2010
