THE GREATER COLUMBUS GOLF AUTHORITY
MINUTES OF MEETING
October 23, 2007
The Greater Columbus Golf Authority held the scheduled monthly meeting at Bull
Creek Golf Course. Members present were Floyd Washington, Nancy Wilkeson,
Richard Hagler, Willie Hill, Michael Silverstein, Aubry Burt and Donald Clack.
Staff members present were John Milam and Steve Brown. June Holder had an
excused absence. Nan Hopkins had an unexcused absence.
Minutes of the September 25, 2007 meeting were not approved. We suspended the
reading of the minutes until November?s meeting.
Old Business
Regarding the employees raises, Isaiah Hugley, City Manager and Pam Hodges,
Finance Director met with Mr. Milam to discuss the raises. This meeting was a
formality and the proposed raises will be presented to the City Council. If
necessary, Bull Creek plans to raise the green fees and/or cart fees at
mid-year to cover the employee?s raises. They will be retroactive to July 1,
2007.
New Business
The Authority meeting scheduled for November is planned. The meeting scheduled
for December will be suspended as it falls on Christmas Day.
Superintendent Report by Steve Brown
We are currently under strict water restrictions. Bull Creek can only water
the greens and seeded turf for 30 days. Oxbow Creek draws water out of a well
and draws under the 100,000 gallons requirement per night. All golf courses in
the Georgia are in the same predicament. The mower height adjustments have
been raised. The practice green, chipping green and tees has been over
seeded. Removal of dead trees and edging the cart paths has begun. The bunker
work will begin soon.
The prison guard, Sam Hardman, did not pass all of his requirements therefore;
he is no longer in the program. We are currently looking for a replacement.
Mr. Pat O?Brien, the Southeast Director of Greens Section, will pay another
visit to Bull Creek. The severe conditions (drought) will provide Steve Brown
with proper management applications.
Godwin Creek
Mr. Milam stated that Godwin Creek is struggling for donations. Nancy Wilkeson
told the Authority members that a billboard was being erected honoring the
local children from Columbus?s First Tee who won a recent tournament. It was
suggested that the new media be contacted to give the First Tee greater
coverage of their accomplishments. The National First Tee is hosting a golf
tournament at Callaway Gardens. They are looking for sponsorships.
Director of Golf
Oxbow Creek?s revenue compared to this time last year is about dollar for
dollar. Bull Creek?s revenue is slightly lower than compared to this time last
year. We expect to see more play since Lakewood Golf Course in Phenix City is
in poor condition.
Richard Hagler adjourned the meeting at 4:17 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Wilkeson, Acting Secretary
