SUBJECT: U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) and American Beverage Association
(ABA) Childhood Obesity Prevention Awards Program

Recommendation: Approval is requested to submit an application and, if
approved, accept a grant in the amount of up to $120,000, or approved amount,
from the U.S. Conference of Mayors and their partner, the American Beverage
Association, to provide funding to prevent childhood obesity through the
programs of Live Healthy Columbus.
Background: The Mayor?s membership in the USCM makes grant opportunities
available for various initiatives. This grant provides funding for large,
mid-sized and small cities to further programs regarding the prevention of
childhood obesity. As a mid-sized city, Columbus, Georgia is eligible for an
award of $25,000- $120,000. The USCM defines a mid-sized city as one with
75,000 - 250,000 residents.
Analysis: Funds will be used to support Childhood Obesity Prevention programs.
Financial Considerations: The grant is for up to $120,000 with no matching
funds.
Projected Annual Fiscal Impact Statement: This grant will be funded one time
only, and will have no annual fiscal impact.
Legal Considerations: The Mayor has been notified of eligibility to receive
the funds.
Recommendations/ Actions: Authorize to submit an application, and if approved,
accept a grant from USCM and ABA in the amount of up to $120,000.
A RESOLUTION

A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR TO SUBMIT AN APPLICATION, AND IF
AWARDED, ACCEPT A GRANT FROM THE U.S. CONFERENCE OF MAYORS AND AMERICAN
BEVERAGE OF UP TO $120,000 TO PROVIDE FUNDING TO PREVENT CHILDHOOD OBESITY.
THERE ARE NO MATCHING FUNDS REQUIRED AND APPROVAL IS REQUESTED TO AMEND THE
MULTI-GOVERNMENTAL FUND BY THE AMOUNT AWARDED.
WHEREAS, Columbus is eligible for up to $120,000 through an award from
the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the American Beverage Association; and,
WHEREAS, the grant will be used to provide funding to prevent childhood
obesity through the programs of Live Healthy Columbus; and,
WHEREAS, the grant will be awarded in at the U.S. Conference of Mayors
Winter Meeting in Washington DC in January 2014.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, HEREBY RESOLVES AS
FOLLOWS:
That the Mayor is hereby authorized to submit, and if approved, accept
a grant from the U.S. Conference of Mayors and American Beverage Association
with no matching funds, to fund operations and programs for Live Healthy
Columbus to prevent childhood obesity.
