A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO EXECUTE A MEMORANDUM OF AGREEMENT
WITH THE GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
BRANCH FLOODPLAIN MANAGEMENT UNIT ACKNOWLEDGING THE SCOPE OF WORK ASSOCIATED
WITH THE MAP MODERNIZATION PROCESS AND PRODUCTION OF DIGITAL FLOOD INSURANCE
RATE MAPS FOR COLUMBUS-MUSCOGEE COUNTY.
WHEREAS, flood hazard areas are subject to periodic inundation that may result
in loss of life and property, health and safety hazards, disruption of commerce
and governmental services, extraordinary public expenditures for flood
protection and relief and impairment of the tax base; and,
WHEREAS, flood losses are caused by the occupancy in flood hazard areas by uses
vulnerable to floods or hazardous to other lands that are inadequately
elevated, flood proofed or otherwise unprotected from flood damage, and by the
cumulative effect of obstructions in floodplains causing increases in flood
heights and velocities; and,
WHEREAS, the development of updated floodplain maps for Columbus-Muscogee
County incorporating the best available information and technology is integral
in supporting our current and future development; and,
WHEREAS, the Columbus Consolidated Government?s Departments of Engineering and
Public Services have worked closely with the Georgia Department of Natural
Resources providing technical assistance and data to include aerial
photography, tax maps and 2-foot contour topography.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, HEREBY RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:
That the City Manager is hereby authorized to execute a Memorandum of Agreement
with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection
Division, Floodplain Management Unit, acting as a Cooperative Technical Partner
with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to develop updated Digital
Flood Insurance Rate Maps for Columbus-Muscogee County, Georgia.
Introduced at a regular meeting of the Council of Columbus, Georgia held the
________ day of _______________ 2006, and adopted at said meeting by the
affirmative vote of __________ members of said council.
