Referrals From Mayor and Council-08/22/2006

Subject Property Ownership

Description Have the staff to get with the Tax Assessor to determine if some

kind of an alert could be put on the tax system on properties where the

ownership is not clear so when someone comes to pay the property taxes, the

City could determine the ownership. (Request of Councilor Turner Pugh)

Response 08/24/06 Property ownerships/updates were delayed due to the software

change in the office of the Clerk of Superior Court. As a result of the

software transition deeds were not available for five (5) months. We have had

an inordinate number of calls and tax bills returned that the property has been

sold. As these sold properties are brought to our attention we immediately

research and update our records accordingly. This enables the Tax

Commissioner's Office to bill the appropriate owner quickly. Simultaneously we

are working to bring all property ownerships up to date and close the gap. The

staff of the Clerk of Superior has worked to help us access these deeds and we

appreciate their efforts.
