Attached you will find the 2013 U.S. Conference of Mayors Study of Metropolitan
Areas throughout the United States. The study and Executive Summary shows more
cities are struggling this year than last year. One third of the Nation's
metropolitan areas will have stagnate or declining growth. Columbus, Georgia
is listed as one of those, but is expected to rebound in 2014 with a 2.5%
growth rate. I have provided a comparison chart of how Columbus stacks up
against other Georgia cities. Here are some interesting details:
Our Gross Metropolitan Product (GMP) is $13 billion.
We have 2.7% of the state's Gross State Product, which is the fourth largest
GMP in the state right behind August at #2 (3.2%) and Savannah at #3 (3.3%).
Atlanta represents 67.8% of the state's Gross State Product.
The Study confirms what we are seeing in tax revenue stagnation. It shows
Columbus with stagnate growth rates of .3% in 2012 and 2013 (down from a 3.5%
growth rate in 2011), but it indicates we will jump to a 2.5% growth rate next
year.
Columbus, Georgia's economy is bigger than Albania and just smaller than
Iceland.
