Council Meeting

Agenda Report # 346

TO: Mayor and Council

SUBJECT: Street Tree Master Plan

INITIATED BY: Department of Public Services

_____________________________________________________________________

Recommendation: Approval is requested of the Street Tree Master Plan prepared

by French and Associates.

Background: The Street Tree Master Plan was created by French and Associates

for the City of Columbus in 2004. This plan has been used each year as a guide

for locating areas throughout the city for tree planting. Since the plan was

completed more than 5,000 trees have been planted.

Analysis: The adoption of this plan will allow the Urban Forestry Division to

continue to plant trees following a recommended plan. This will be more

efficient and allow uniformity in the street tree plantings. It will also

protect the trees from being removed or pruned by billboard companies. The

continue use of this plan will ensure an even distribution of tree plantings

citywide.

Financial Considerations: By the continue use of this plan, the city will save

money by reducing planning time for future tree plantings projects.

Recommendations/ Actions: Approve the attached Resolution establishing the

Street Tree Master Plan as a guide for the Urban Forestry program to use to

enhance the Urban Forest in Columbus.
