Agenda Item # 6
Columbus Consolidated Government
Council Meeting
May 22, 2018
Agenda Report # 123
TO: Mayor and Council
SUBJECT: 2018 Georgia Association of EMS and Georgia Trauma Commission Grant
Phase #2
INITIATED BY: Columbus Fire and EMS Department
Recommendation: Approval is requested to apply for and accept, if awarded, a
grant of $4,925.26, or as otherwise awarded, from Georgia Association of EMS
and Georgia Trauma Commission, with no local match required, and amend the
Multi-Governmental Fund by the amount of the award.
Background: Funds have been allocated to the Georgia Association of EMS from
the Georgia Trauma Commission for the purchase of trauma equipment. In 2007,
the Georgia Legislature through Senate Bill 60 established the Georgia Trauma
Care Network Commission. In 2012, the Georgia Legislature through SB 489
amended SB 60 and thus O.G.C.G 31 -11- 100 to require annual reporting of
Commission's activities to both House and Senate Committees on Health and
Human Services. Trauma continues to be the leading cause of death between the
ages of 1-44. Overall injury is the 4th leading cause of death in the Unites
States, but life-years lost are greater from injury than from 3 other leading
causes of death combined, which are heart disease, cancer, and stroke. The
grant funds will be used to purchase equipment that will be used to better
equip Columbus Fire and EMS in the treatment of trauma patients.
Analysis: The Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services will purchase
equipment with funds being reimbursed by the state
Financial Considerations: The grant is for equipment that will enhance the
treatment of the trauma patient amounting to $4,925.26, with no matching funds
required.
Projected Annual Fiscal Impact Statement: Grant funds will be utilized to
purchase equipment that would otherwise adversely affect the department?s
medical supply budget.
Legal Considerations: The Columbus Consolidated Government is eligible to
receive these funds.
Recommendation/Action: Authorize the City Manager to apply for and accept a
grant of $4,925.26 from the Georgia Association of EMS and Georgia Trauma
Commission and amend the Multi-Governmental Fund by the amount of the award.
