Agenda Item # 1

Columbus Consolidated Government

Council Meeting

10/24/2017

Agenda Report # 41

TO: Mayor and Council

SUBJECT: Request for Speed Study on I-185

INITIATED BY: Department of Engineering

Recommendation: Approval is requested for a traffic study by Georgia

Department of Transportation(GDOT) for I-185 from J.R. Allen/U.S. 80 south to

Victory Drive/U.S. 280 to determine if adjustments to the current speed limit

of 65 mph is appropriate for improved safety.

Background: In 2010 Council requested the speed limit on I-185 passing through

Columbus, Georgia be increased from 55 mph to 65 mph.

Analysis: Over recent years there have been a large number accidents along

this corridor. It is recommended to have a traffic study initiated to

determine if a reduction of the speed limit is appropriate in the congested

sections.

Financial Considerations: All signs impacted by any changes would be replaced

by GDOT.

Projected Annual Fiscal Impact Statement: There are no annual fiscal impacts

expected at this time.

Legal Considerations: GDOT has requested support from the City in requesting a

study and potential reduction in speed limit. The Ordinance regulating

vehicular traffic for speed enforcement would have to be revised if the speed

limit is modified.

Recommendations/ Actions: Approval is requested for a traffic study by Georgia

Department of Transportation(GDOT) for I-185 from J.R. Allen/U.S. 80 south to

Victory Drive/U.S. 280 to determine if adjustments to the current speed limit

of 65 mph is appropriate for improved safety.
