OCTOBER 14, 2008 COMMISSIONERS MEETING MINUTES



Commissioners present: Beth Burgin, Julie Bray, Katie Coakley, Jack Collins,

Carrie Cowley, Bill Green, Christine Dawson, Ron Davis, Doris Estell, Marie

Lewis, Sandra Mason, Pat Killough, Phillip Vongsavang, Jimmy Motos, Robert

Watkins, Sherrylrae Wicker, Stan Stovall.



Commissioners absent: Bill Consoletti, Susie Hamlett, Josephina Takemoto,

Priscilla Marshall, and Larry Trammell. Unexcused absence: Peggy Myles and B.

J. McBride.



Also present: John Brent, Gloria Weston-Smart and Nicole Sanchez.



CALL TO ORDER

The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Beth Burgin.



APPROVAL OF MINUTES FOR AUGUST 12, 2008

Minutes approved.



TREASURER?S REPORT

The Treasurer?s Report was presented by Jack Collins and filed for audit.



PROGRAM

The meeting was held at the Columbus Botanical Gardens. Nicole Sanchez, the

Director, gave an update on what is going on at the Gardens and what events are

planned for the upcoming months.



PETITIONS AND COMMUNICATION



NEW BUSINESS

The Executive Board met with Carey Barfield, CPA, to discuss accounting

procedures. There is a follow-up meeting planned for Thursday, November 13,

2008, to further discuss accounting and bookkeeping concerns.



OLD BUSINESS

Beth reported that the development of a Finance Team is still ongoing.



KCBC CALENDAR

Help-the-Hooch, Household Hazardous Waste/Electronic Recycling is planned for

Friday, and Saturday, October 17-18, 2008. Schools will clean their campuses

on Friday and the public will clean up on Saturday. There is a Watershed

Festival Thank you party planned for Saturday, October 18, 2008 beginning at

11:00 till 2:00 p.m. for the volunteers. There will be free drinks, popcorn,

hot dogs, and cotton candy and free t-shirts as long as the supply

lasts.



Telephone Book Recycling, will begin in October and go until January 9, 2009.

The schools collecting the most telephone books to recycle can win cash for

their school. The cash is to be used for an environmental project at the

school.



Magic of Recycling: This is a fun event for the schools. We have 13 shows to

be presented at the different schools, at the Columbus Public Library on Macon

Road, and to the South Columbus Boys and Girls Club. Commissioners have signed

up to introduce the show to the students. All Commissioners are encouraged to

attend one of the shows to experience the fun the kids have and how they learn

about recycling.



Christmas Tree Recycling begins on December 26, 2008, when residents are

encouraged to bring their live trees to be recycled into mulch. The drop off

locations are: Cooper Creek Park, Britt David Park, Shirley Winston Park,

Dinglewood Park, and the Columbus Botanical Gardens. On Saturday, January 3,

2009, the trees will be chipped. The mulch will be delivered to Columbus

Botanical Gardens to be used on their new walking trail. Commissioners are

encouraged to sign up and volunteer for this project. Seedlings will be given

out to people who bring their trees on January 3, 2009.



Lonnie Jackson Memorial: There will be a groundbreaking for the Memorial on

Thursday, November 20, 2008.



Tour of Gardens 2009: The committee has worked hard choosing gardens. There

are 11 or 12 gardens confirmed at this time.



ANNOUNCEMENT

KGB 30th Annual Awards Luncheon will be held at the Fox Theatre on October 23,

2008. Gloria and Carolyn plan to attend.



Recycling at the Steeplechase: All of the recycling bins from the Recycling

Trailer will be used at the Steeplechase this year. Goodwill Industries will

pick up the bins and deliver them to the Steeplechase.



NEXT COMMISSIONERS MEETING WILL BE TUESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2008, 12:00 NOON, AT

TREES COLUMBUS, LOCATED AT 303 12TH STREET. PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A DIFFERENT

LOCATION JUST FOR THE DECEMBER MEETING.
