WHEREAS, during his distinguished career, the Reverend Dr. J.H. Flakes, Jr. has

made significant contributions to the Columbus, Georgia community;



WHEREAS, Rev. Flakes received a Bachelor of Arts degree from American Baptist

College in Nashville, Tennessee and honorary Doctorate degrees from A.B. Lee

Theological Seminary in Jacksonville, Florida and from American Baptist College;



WHEREAS, he has been a recipient of the Alpha Phi Alpha Martin Luther King

Award, the Knighthood Award from the Congress of Christian Education, and has

been recognized as one of the Ten Outstanding Ministers in the State of Georgia;



WHEREAS, Rev. Flakes has served as Moderator of the East Alabama Missionary

Baptist Progressive Association, Lecture for Moderator?s Division, Teacher in

the Minister?s Division, and on the Executive Committee Board of the National

Baptist Convention;



WHEREAS, he is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of American Baptist College,

Chairman of One Columbus, and founder of ?A Call To Talk?;



WHEREAS, Rev. Flakes was recently recognized when the Administration Building

at the American Baptist Training School in Nashville, Tennessee was named in

his honor;



WHEREAS, Rev. Flakes has traveled extensively abroad, including the

Philippines, Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong, India, Egypt, the former Soviet Union,

Africa, Germany, Italy and the Holy Land;



WHEREAS, Rev. Flakes has been married to the lovely Robena Gaines Flakes for

fifty-seven years and is the father of three children and grandfather of three

granddaughters;



WHEREAS, the Columbus Council wishes to honor the occasion of the 50th

Anniversary of Rev. Flakes? ministry at Fourth Street Baptist Church of

Columbus, Georgia.



NOW THEREFORE THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA HEREBY RESOLVES:



In honor of Reverend Dr. J.H. Flakes, Jr. and his devotion to Columbus,

Georgia and its citizens, the street known as 5th Street in Columbus, Georgia

is hereby designated ?Rev. J.H. Flakes, Jr. Way,? in its entirety. This

honorary designation shall not change the official street map, but the Traffic

Engineer is hereby authorized to erect appropriate signage in a color

distinguishable from standard street signage. Let a copy of this Resolution to

Reverend Doctor J.H. Flakes, Jr.
