RESOLUTION
NO.
WHEREAS, local public safety personnel, in cooperation with the Muscogee County
School District and numerous other community agencies, provide an annual
DUI/distracted driving re-enactment and safety demonstration annually for area
high school students;
WHEREAS, the public safety demonstration is designed to make area teens aware
of the dangers of driving while distracted whether by means of alcohol,
electronic device, etc. In 2009, three thousand drivers ages 15-19 were killed
in motor vehicle crashes ? many of whom were using cellular devices at the time
of the crash;
WHEREAS, this annual program has reached approximately 30,000 students since
its inception in 2000;
WHEREAS, Paramedics Darrell Enfinger (Region 7 Emergency Preparedness Director)
and Brice Patterson (Captain - Columbus Fire/EMS) have been the driving forces
behind the annual event. Mr. Enfinger serves as logistical coordinator of the
presentation, involving law enforcement, fire/EMS, coroner?s office and other
area agencies. Mr. Patterson is responsible for creative direction and provides
the services necessary to record the event for playback at a later time;
WHEREAS, the DVD presentation of the annual program was recognized by the
Emergency Nurses Association as its national Media Award winner for 2010. The
award was presented at the organization?s annual conference in San Antonio,
Texas on September 23rd, 2010;
WHEREAS, video copies of the presentation are being used in the classroom to
educate other teens on the dangers of distracted driving in states as far away
as Utah and New Jersey;
WHEREAS, presentations are being done in other areas of the country, based on
the design used by our local agencies, in order to train providers in these
locations in setting up their own demonstrations.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA HEREBY RESOLVES:
We hereby commend and congratulate Paramedics Darrell Enfinger and Fire/EMS
Captain Brice Patterson for their work with this valuable program, and
congratulate them on receiving the ENA?s prestigious National Media Award. The
Consolidated Government will continue to provide support to its public safety
agencies so that the program and its vital content continue to make a
difference as we fight to save the lives of teen drivers in our area. Let a
copy of this resolution be forwarded to Darrell Enfinger and Fire/EMS Captain
Brice Patterson.
